Motherwell Rugby Football Club Player Dead, Others Missing
LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – One Motherwell Rugby Football Club player is dead and five are missing, following beach training Sunday. Motherwell Rugby Club confirms news that one of its players has fatally drowned. As many as twenty-one people were pulled out to sea by a strong rip current. The men were training for an upcoming competition in the Saru Easter Tournament in Cape Town.
In a news statement today, SA Rugby Union (Saru) confirmed the tragic drowning. Saru president Oregan Hoskins tells news “I have spoken to the president of Eastern Province Kings rugby union and members of the community… and this is a devastating tragedy.” He added “These young men were preparing to compete in a Saru Easter Tournament in Cape Town in a fortnight and were enjoying a care-free day on the beach with their teammates… To have their afternoon turned into a day of tragedy is shocking for the whole rugby community and our thoughts and prayers go out to their families.”
Today, officials confirm that one player is dead and as many as five remain missing after nearly twenty were pulled out to sea. Motherwell Rugby Football Club team manager Mncedisi Mazomba tells news that one player began drowning when others jumped to his rescue. They too, then, were drawn into the strong current and pulled out to sea.
Lifeguard Brendon Helm tells news that his team was able to rescue fifteen players. One player was reportedly heard screaming “He was so close to me. I could have saved him. I could have saved his life. How am I supposed to feel about that?”
