LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A strong Chile earthquake today 2012 has struck Santiago. The Chile terremoto hoy Saturday March 24, 2012 struck in the predawn morning hours. Local news has yet to report any injures from today’s Chile temblor. Today’s quake, however, marks one of the strongest earthquakes to strike on-land, in Chile, this year.
Saturday morning, Chile residents were awaken by a strong earthquake. But unlike most Chile temblors, this one wasn’t centered out to sea but on-land. In fact, today’s Chile terremoto was just west of Santiago.
USGS reports to news that today’s quake, however, had a moderate depth. Striking at forty-one miles below the earth’s surface, the temblor did not have a wide impact across the region.
Today’s quake struck at 3:28 am Saturday and was centered twenty-two miles southwest of Los Andres. USGS reports to news today today’s Chile terremoto was only twenty-seven miles northwest of Santiago, forty-two miles east of Valparaiso, and just fifty-five miles northeast of San Antonio.
Local news reports, however, that a second quake struck the region moments ago (map above). Shortly before 9 am local time, a 4.5 magnitude quake struck in the Tarapaca region. It was felt in Peru’s Tacna region, USGS reports to news, and could be felt east of Moquegua, Peru as well. No reports of damage have yet to be documented by local news.
