CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – The JR Smith Tahiry Twitter photo that made news last week was neither leaked nor accidental. Smith was reportedly laughing after the Twitpic dominated news on Friday. But now that JR Smith Tahiry Twitter pic has cost the basketball player a hefty NBA penalty.
Last week, Knicks guard JR Smith tweeted the picture from his official account. Smith was on the road for a game in Milwaukee. The original message was a retweet of Tahiry’s comment “I can’t watch the game like this. D- … you!” Added to the message was a Twitpic of Tahiry laying on a bed, with her backside facing the camera, and her eyes focused on the basketball game on TV.
She later tweeted “I’m mad at you think this … was funny. We will deal with this later. However, you are not going anywhere.” She added “he thinks this is the funniest … You’re so dead Mr. Smith, I’m up next.”
Joe Budden later wrote “even the high road ends”. Smith later wrote “Sorry for my last tweet to Tahiry and Joe Budden. I see y’all will never be done. So I’ll step aside”.
On Friday, he told news he hadn’t been contacted yet by the NBA. “No, not yet. I’m sure they will. I haven’t heard from anybody yet.” He later added “I mean, I didn’t know it was going to be as big a deal as it is now… I definitely regret it. I take away from our team. Anytime I do anything that takes away from our team I’m definitely going to regret it.”
On Saturday, the NBA contacted Smith. “NYK’s Jr Smith has been fines $25,000 for posting inappropriate pictures on his Twitter account” said the news statement.
