LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – A Bobby Brown tell-all book about Whitney Houston caused a family rift, far before news today that Brown may not be granted access to Houston’s funeral. In 2008, Whitney Houston’s rep issued a statement to news disputing allegations by Brown. Moreover, Houston’s rep said at the time that she was saddened by Brown’s claims; in Bobbi Kristina’s interest, Houston would not use the news media as a forum to battle Brown’s accusations in the book.
Following his divorce from Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown published the book “The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But”. In the book, Bobby Brown claimed Houston during his marriage made him an alleged addict to illegal substances.
Houston was saddened by the accusations. Houston’s rep issued the following news statement at the time “Miss Houston is sad that Bobby feels he need to say such things but she chooses to take the high road and will not speak badly about the father of her child even if it’s to set the record straight.”
Brown reportedly detailed in his book that he allegedly had an affair with Karrine “Superhead” Steffans. “Yes, I’ve slept with her”.
The book was published roughly one year after Houston’s divorce from Brown after fifteen years of marriage. But Brown wrote in the book, that in his mind, Houston didn’t enter marriage for the same reason as him. “I think we got married for all the wrong reasons. Now, I realize Whitney had a different agenda than I did when we got married . . . I believe her agenda was to clean up her image, while mine was to be loved and have children.”
The former couple had split in 2006, two years before the book was published. Houston filed for divorce. In initial court documents, Houston asked for custody of Bobbi Kristina, with Brown to have visitation rights.
In May 2006, news reports claimed the couple’s marriage was in trouble. PEOPLE reported at the time that Houston was allegedly using illegal substances causing a rift in the marriage. Brown denied the accusations at the time. “We are happily married. … We are going to stand for each other for as long we live. I adore that woman. She helps me see God. I look in her eyes and I see God.”
By September, Houston filed for divorce. Her rep Nancy Seltzer told PEOPLE in September that year, however, “We’re saying she filed for divorce because that is (Whitney’s) intent.” Just one year earlier, Houston appeared with Brown in the short-lived Bravo reality show Being Bobby Brown.
Family insiders told news this week that Houston and Brown were exceptionally close in later years. The two reportedly vacationed together with their daughter. But unconfirmed news report this week claim that Houston’s family is not close with Brown and has allegedly informed Brown he will not be granted access to Houston’s funeral.
