Dominican Republic Earthquake Today, Terremoto, Felt in Santo Domingo

CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – A strong Dominican Republic earthquake today was felt across the region. The Dominican Republic terremoto, a temblor striking in the pre-dawn hours, registered a 5.3 magnitude. Unlike other quakes in the region in recent months, this one was located online. No reports of injuries have been documented by local news.
The Dominican Republic earthquake struck today January 5, 2012 at 5:35 am local time, USGS reports to news. The quake was of nominal depth, USGS indicates to news. With an epicenter of only six miles below the earth’s surface, the terremoto could be felt across a wide region.

The terremoto was thirty-four miles west of Santa Domingo, forty-six miles each of Barahona, and sixty-one miles south of San Francisco de Macoris. The quake was roughly eight hundred miles south of Miami.
USGS reports to news that the quake was north of the coastal towns of Palmar de Ocoa, El Llano and Nizano. The quake was located inland, north of highway 2 and south of highway 41. Situated in a mountain range, the quake was closest to the towns of Estbania and San Jose de Ocoa, USGS reports to news. No damage has yet to be reported by local news channels.
