Gage Edward of Flipping Out Slows Jeff Lewis Pace

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Gage Edward of Flipping Out is slowing the pace of Jeff Lewis, the stressed out, Pollo Loco underfed star that fans have grown to love, this season on Bravo. Gage Edward, Jeff Lewis’ new boyfriend, was first revealed pre-season by LALATE. While Edward is charming, Flipping Out producers have yet to figure out where his character works.
In season one, LALATE called Jeff Lewis one of the best reality stars on television. Yet, while Lewis is as entertaining as ever, Flipping Out is no longer the same series. Lewis’ self-deprecating humor in earlier seasons was based upon his obsessive, compulsive behavior. There was the irregular stemware, the requirements of salsa sides for each Pollo Loco order, the timeclock for employees using the restroom. Gone is that dynamic.

So, are Gage Edward and producers to blame? There are deadlines, and speaker opportunities after a night of Las Vegas drinking, that Jeff has to battle. In any other season, those requirements would have parlayed in perfect comedic pieces for Lewis.
Jenni Pulos would aid Lewis’ delivery. Pulos in her own delightful way then and now makes the situation worse. If there were going to walk the street, the court jester might dance with two men in underwear. If she is going to lunch with a client, she might lose her hair clips before the first course.
Those were the ingredients that fans grew to love. Suddenly along came Gage Edward and something went wrong.
Producers could have bounced Lewis’ high strung personality against Edward’s librarian-like personality to make a great balance. But they didn’t. While Edward is charming, producers missed the ball with his character.
Last night, viewers saw Edward constantly in control, constantly telling everyone to clean up their game, and constantly looking at the computer screen in a hypnotic state.
With the exception of one tweet in which a viewer wondered if Edward and Seth Meyers are separated at birth (HERE), the overriding remarks about Edward online have been exceptionally negative, some so negative that cannot be reprinted.
As Lewis’ delightful antics have slowed this season, his hilarious compulsive behavior has been shown less on screen. Why? In replacement, viewers get to see Gage complaining all the time. That’s simply bad producing. Flipping Out had ingredients that worked. And while Gage might be a part of Lewis’ personal life, his role in his reality TV life – at least as depicted by producers – has been for the negative this season.
