ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Coil won the Haskell Invitational 2011 moments ago. Coil’s impressive come-from-behind win gave Bob Baffert his fifth win at the Haskell Invitational. Shackleford dominated the mid-stretch. But in the final yards, on the outside, Coil blazed ahead for the win. Ruler on Ice finished third

Pants On Fire’s owner was disappointed, but still congratulated the competition. “We wanted Pants to stay closer to front. But we have to give all the congratulations in the world to Coil, Shackleford” he told news.

Coil today beat out the Illinois Derby winner (Joe Vann), and the Louisiana Derby winner (Pants of Fire) today. Ruler On Ice last won the Belmont. The 3 year Coil joins previous winners by Baffert including Lookin At Lucky (2010), War Emblem (2002), and Point Given (2001).

Baffert said earlier this week of Coil “I’m just hoping that Coil … we’re going to find out a lot about him, see how good he is”.
