CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – Mark Haines of CNBC’s Squawk Box is dead at age 65; cause of death has not been released. Squawk Box and CNBC confirmed Mark Haines’s death this morning after Haines died unexpectedly last night. Haines had been an institution of morning business news broadcasting. For many fans, including LALATE, Haines was irreplaceable; he was brilliantly informative, entertaining, and charismatic, helping us comprehend and advance ourselves through changing markets. For twenty-two years, Haines was one of the great news anchors of CNBC, if not the best.
Mark Haines joined CNBC in 1989 after previous news broadcasting positions on the east coast. Before joining CNBC, Haines was with KYW-TV in Philadelphia, WABC-TV in New York and WPRI-TV in Providence. A New Jersey lawyer and graduate of University of Pennsylvania Law School, Haines reported on key business news events of the last two decades.
But Haines was irreplaceable in his charm and profound insight into the markets. CNBC President Mark Hoffman issued a news statement today upon news of Haines’ passing. With his searing wit, profound insight and piercing interview style, he was a constant and trusted presence in business news for more than 20 years,” Hoffman said. “From the dotcom bubble to the tragic events of 9/11 to the depths of the financial crisis, Mark was always the unflappable pro. Mark loved CNBC and we loved him back. He will be deeply missed.”
Mark Haines was honored with a moment of silence today by the New York Stock Exchange. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
