LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – When scandal photos of a Kappa Sigma member hit the internet last Saturday, the reactions were mixed. Tonight, the story is headline news on Los Angeles broadcast television. And yet, despite the requests for interviews, USC is not speaking out this evening about one of the most publicized antics on campus in recent memories.
Photos posted online depicted a Kappa Sigma male member having relations with a female exhibitionist / companion on the “roof” of Waite Phillips Hall.
Students interviewed by broadcast news reporters tonight weren’t so sure it was even a scandal, one referring to it as a mild “prank”, another calling it “funny”. That is not how Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Denzil Suite referred to during an interview with the LA Times. Denzil said the trouble erupted when the male and female exhibitions set off the alarm system trying to access the roof.
In aerial footage released tonight, TV news showed that the roof of Waite Phillips Hall is anything but a flat surface. In fact, a narrow rim or parapet surrounds the outer layer of the structure. Sunken out of sight are the structures’ cooling and heating systems. It’s on the parapet, not the roof, where the two exhibitions engaged in their activity.
So how did this Kappa Sigma member figure out how to even get through the building’s security system, let alone maneuver on the precarious parapet? That remains to be seen. L.A. broadcast TV did indicate they have located the male but he has declined any interviews.
Suite gave a vague quote to the Times that USC is investigating the matter. But Suite added that the USC policies prohibit public disclosure of student disciplinary actions. The photos have been posted on LA Weekly, LA Curbed, and LA Taco, and imgur.com.
USC Kappa Sigma has confirmed the male as one of its members, suspending him, declaring his conduct was not becoming of their fraternity nor of a “gentleman”. Yes, it’s unbecoming of fraternity members, at least at Kappa Sigma, to be on the parapet of school buildings anything improper.
