Larry Wilcox (ChiPs) gets Probation for Securities Fraud

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Larry Wilcox (ChiPs) will be back on the freeway. Larry Wilcox played Jon Baker in the 1980s sitcom opposite Erik Estrada’s Ponch. But today, Wilcox could have been sentenced to five years in federal prison after a conviction on securities fraud.

Instead, a federal court ruled Friday that Wilcox is a free man, sentencing him to 500 hours of community service and three years of probation. The sentencing came after Wilcox entered a guilty plea in November 2010.

The case concerned kickbacks paid to pension fund managers or similar that convinced their customer base to buy penny stocks. The Securities and Exchange Commission did not issued a statement today following the sentencing of the 63 year old actor. Wilcox has yet to comment as well.

Erik Estrada currently appears in a series of Toyota commercials airing in Southern California. Estrada and Wilcox returned on camera in the 1999 special ChiPs ‘99.

Wilcox once said “The film business was a great lesson in business combat and what it takes to survive…. I feel so lucky I was able to ride the merry-go-round that most people dream about but never get the opportunity. If they do, it is later in life and is sometimes construed as a poor and untimely reflection of one’s choices.”

Tracy Morgan Sarah Palin Remark Prompts Apology

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Tracy Morgan’s Sarah Palin remark has prompted a TNT apology to the politician. Tracy Morgan’s comments about Sarah Palin aired live during TNT’s Thursday night broadcast of “Inside the NBA”. The remark was not censored before airing.

Tracy Morgan had joined on court TNT hosts Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson. Morgan is best known for his appearance on NBC’s “30 Rock” opposite Tina Fey who has garnered an Emmy for her Sarah Palin parodies.

Smith and Barkley during the broadcast chose to turn the TNT program into less about basketball, and more like an episode of Donny Deutsch’s Love Calling.  Smith asked Morgan who is hotter “Tina Fey or Sarah Palin?” Barkley followed up with the question “Sarah Palin’s good looking, isn’t she?”

Morgan then responded with “Let me tell you something about Sarah Palin—she’s good m— material.”

Jeff Pomeroy in a news statement quickly apologized for Morgan’s remarks “It’s unfortunate Mr. Morgan showed a lack of judgment on our air with his inappropriate comments. We apologize for any embarrassment or offense it may have caused.” Pomeroy and TNT in their statement did not mention anything wrong with the  Smith and Barkley questions.

Gladys Horton of the Marvelettes Dead at 66

CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – Gladys Horton of the Marvelettes is dead at age 66. Gladys Horton’s death was confirmed by family today; Horton died Wednesday in a Sherman Oaks nursing home after having suffered a recent stroke.

Gladys Horton co-founded the Marvelettes. But that wasn’t the girl group’s original name. They were originally the Casinyets (short of Can’t Sing Yet”) and then changed their name to the Marvels. But when Berry Gordy signed them to Tamla, they became the Marvelettes. Horton was just 15 when the group released Please Mr. Postman, the group’s only number one hit.

Bill Wilson, CEO of the Motown Alumni Association, tells NPR today that Horton and the Marvelettes were pioneers in the girl group format. Years before Motown had classes to stylize its talents, the Marvelettes did it all themselves. They bought their own clothes and styled their own look and moves. Later hit songs included “Playboy,” “Beechwood 4-5789″ and “Too Many Fish in the Sea.”

Son Vaughn Thornton said his mother suffered a stroke last year. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Gladys Horton will be great missed.

Jessa Schauman Death Treated as Suspicious

ST LOUIS (LALATE) – Jessa Schauman was found shot dead Wednesday; today investigators on the Jessa Schauman case are still unsure if the former St Louis city prosecutor was the victim of a suicide or homicide shooting.

Jessa Schauman, 33, had worked previously as a prosecutor with the St Louis Circuit Attorney’s office. Today her co-workers are still shocked by the news. An initial call to her home Wednesday reported the death as a suicide. But investigators are instead handling the case through their homicide department. They confirm the case is being treated as a suspicious death.

No person has been arrested; one unidentified individual has been questioned.

Schauman worked most recently with St Louis County as an assistant circuit attorney, focusing on domestic violence, assault and robbery cases. Colleagues today are remembering her six years with the office. Her parents, residents of Webster Groves, have declined comment.

Close friends of Schauman said she had left her job with the County to enter private practice as a criminal defense attorney.
