Remember Alex Brown – ABC Helps Warn of Texting and Driving Harm

Remember Alex Brown ABC Helps Warn of Texting and Driving Harms

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – “Remember Alex Brown”, the pledge against texting and driving, has become a national drive by the Brown Family. But last night, Alex Brown’s texting accident got national coverage during a special edition of ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition. While texting and driving has for several years been unlawful in California, the Remember Alex Brown message is to insure that our teens, in every state, understand the harm.

As explained to news in advance of last night’s program, ABC (NYSE: DIS) sought to detail the tragic car accident of seventeen year old Alex. She perished in a November 2009 crash as a result of texting. States across the country between 2008 and roughly the time of Alex’s death were quickly trying to update their driving laws to enact text messaging bans.

For California residents, that didn’t come until September 24, 2008. Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law that day Senate Bill 28 (SB 28), introduced by Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto). The law banned the use of any wireless device to write, send or read a text while operating a motor vehicle. The ordinance is not limited to cellphones but any wireless device.

“Building on legislation already helping save lives in California , I am happy to sign this bill because it further encourages safe and responsible driving,” said then Governor Schwarzenegger in a statement to news at the time. “Banning electronic text messaging while driving will keep drivers’ hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road, making our roadways a safer place for all Californians.”

But what’s the harm of not following the law? That was the focus on last night’s Remembering Alex Brown special segment on Extreme Makeover. As reported previously on LALATE, Justin Bieber and Emma Roberts joined the ABC special to help convey the message. If you break the law in California, you get a mere $20 first offense fine, and $50 fine for any subsequent offense. But as last night’s broadcast depicted, you could lose far more than $20; you could lose your life.

When asked about last night’s special, Alex’s sister Katrina told news “If Alex was here and seeing all this she would be so excited for us. She’d be like, ‘I’m so glad y’all are getting this! Y’all are doing good. Keep going.’ “

Justin Bieber Joins Alex Brown Pledge in Extreme Makeover Home Edition

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Justin Bieber joins the Alex Brown Pledge tonight (videos below) during a broadcast of Extreme Makeover Home Edition. Justin Bieber visits the Brown family that has dedicated their lives to remembering Alex Brown and educating others. This evening, Bieber visits the ABC series to send the message to young adults to never text while drive.

On “Brown Family” tonight on ABC, the Extreme Makeover team visits a family that lost their child during a horrible car accident. The family gets the surprise of a lifetime with an extreme makeover and visits from singer Justin Bieber and actress Emma Roberts.

Alex Brown was 17 and hoping for a career in broadcasting when her life was tragically ended during a horrible car crash. But two years ago, that changed.

ABC in a news statement in advance of tonight’s broadcast explained that in “November 2009, she was killed in a single car accident.” Today the Brown family is dedicating their lives to educating others. “[T]he Browns turned their tragedy into something constructive, and today they travel around Texas to local high schools with Alex’s wrecked truck on their flat-bed trailer to remind young people of the dangers of distracted driving. “  Justin Bieber visits the family and joins the pledge not to text and drive.

Help for tonight’s special was also provided by Palm Harbor Homes, USG Corp, Spears Furniture, and Southwest Spiral Design, among other companies.

2011 Pro Bowl Michael Vick Battles Philip Rivers

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – As the 2011 Pro Bowl kicks off today (start time three hours away), Michael Vick and the NFC roster will battle AFC starters headed by Philip Rivers. And while Vick vs Rivers is expected to be one of the best lineups for a Pro Bowl showdown in recent years, off the field Vick is making news today as well.

Insiders claim that Michael Vick will get designated as a franchise player by the Eagles next week. If true, Vick’s salary could jump from $5.25 million last season to a potential $20 million for next season. For Vick, who has battled court scheduled debt repayments, a 2011 salary could finally put his financial life back in the positive.

Kevin Kolb remains under contract for next season at a $1.4 million price tag; but insiders say that Kolb still could get traded.

With today’s Pro Bowl start time at 4 pm PST on FOX, Rivers will be supported by Arian Foster at running back, Reggie Wayne and Brandon Lloyd at receiving, and Vonta Leach at fullback. Vick will have Michael Turner as his running back, Roddy White and Calvin Johnson as his receivers, and Ovie Mughelli as his fullback.

Andy Reid praised Vick earlier in the season when he told news “His accelerated play was brilliant. This is what I think is right. He’s back and maybe even a little better.” Vick said of his 2010 season “I feel like I’m like 25 or 26 again, even though that’s not the case.” Click HERE for the today’s rosters.

Charlie Sheen Porcelain Teeth? Sheen's Teeth Falling Out from Substance Abuse: Report

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Charlie Sheen allegedly has porcelain teeth after losing all his teeth from years of substance abuse, claims a friend this weekend. Charlie Sheen’s alleged “porcelain teeth” revelation comes from “film” star Kacey Jordan, the party friend who told news this weekend that Sheen cut her a $30,000 check last week during a 36 hour out of control party.

In a news interview this weekend, Jordan says that Sheen allegedly confessed to her that his teeth are fake and falling out repeatedly, that he has “porcelain teeth”. Jordan claims the cause is alleged substance “abuse caused too much wear and tear on his real teeth.”

In another interview, Jordan describes Sheen’s dental situation even worse “All his teeth have fallen out from partying. He kept saying f- porcelain teeth… Said he had to get gold teeth. Most of his teeth fallen out, he wouldn’t say why but we all know it’s because of the [...substance] use.”

Sheen is in rehab this weekend. Before entering rehab, Sheen texted : ‘I’m fine. People don’t seem to get it. Guy can’t have a great time and do his job also?”

Torrey Pines Leaderboard – Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson Leading

Torrey Pines Leaderboard - Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson Leading

SAN DIEGO (LALATE) – Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson are atop the Torrey Pines leaderboard in today’s fourth round of the Farmers Insurance Open. While Bill Haas and Jhonattan Vegas follow narrowly behind, Tiger Woods is stumbling. With a $5.8 million winning purse at stake, Mickelson is dominating in cloudy temperatures with 5 mph winds.

Tiger Woods’ troubles at Torrey Pines set in Saturday when he shot over par, his second time in 46 rounds on the course and his first time 2002. Insiders had believed Torrey Pines was the likely course to showcase a possible rebounding Tiger. He’s won the course six times. Tiger’s worse finish here was 2004’s tenth place finish. That could change Sunday with Tiger currently tied at 35th. He delivered during the first three rounds a 69, 69, and 74.

Despite his problems, Tiger told news that he knows where his shots are failing, that he has the ability to get the shots, and that his swing is off dramatically. Analysts are still unsure if Tiger’s switch of swing coaches has been the cause of his troubles. He broke ties with Hank Haney after six years and is now trying Sean Foley.

Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson are currently 12 under through the second today; Haas and Vegas are 11 under and Anthony Kim is close behind at 10 under. Current leaderboard results are located here.

The big performers today so far are Vegas and Dustin Johnson who are both two under. Nick Watney has surged into the tenth position with a five under through six rounds.
