SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO (LALATE) – An earthquake hit Puerto Rico moments ago. Today’s earthquake (terremoto) is the third significant temblor to strike Puerto Rico this year.
Today’s earthquake struck at 7:43 pm local time. Local news has yet to report any injuries. The quake was centered two miles west of Aguas Buenas, two miles north of Santa Clara, four miles west of Bairoa, and twelve miles south-southwest of San Juan.
The quake registered a significant depth of 64 miles below the earth’s surface.
In May, Puerto Rico was struck by a 5.8 earthquake located closest to Moca, Aceitunas, and Hato Arriba. On April 17, 2010 another quake dominated noticias after striking a separate section of the island.
The two springtime quakes struck while Puerto Rico was bringing pride and celebration to the island with the Los Premios Billboard 2010. Chayanne said the event was significant to the improved future for San Juan. “We’ll try to be the best hosts so that artists, as well as the industry and the media alike feel right at home in Puerto Rico. We want to present a show like no other, in tune with the music we represent.”
Myriam Hernandez added: “In my career, Puerto Rico and Billboard have been two very important pillars; now for the first time they join in the production of such prestigious awards for Latin music”.
