George Djura Jakubec House Destruction – Evacuations, Interstate 15 Closures Slated

ESCONDIDO (LALATE) – George Djura Jakubec’s bomb house will be destroyed in a scheduled burning Wednesday. Evacuations are slated in advance of the destruction of Jakubec’s bomb-making residence.
Local authorities say they have never seen, nor done, anything like this. Even Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in advance of Wednesday’s operation. The home will be burned Wednesday if weather patterns stay close to predictions. Part of the many concerns is wind movements shifting near Interstate 15.
For weeks, bomb investigators have analyzed how best to proceed with the destruction of a house, covered floor to ceiling with finished and unfinished explosives, chemicals, and deadly substances. An elaborate team of local firefighters, hazardous materials experts and weather forecasters have been dispatched to prepare for Wednesday’s endeavor.
San Marcos Fire Chief Todd Newman says he is hoping for fog and nominal wind. He has dispatched nearly three dozen experts from across the country. Among their tasks will be to analyze over one dozen sensors in place that will report smoke data every 120 seconds. A 16-foot-high metal-framed wall will attempt to protect a neighbor’s home. The County’s Air Pollution Control District has place a portable weather station on Escondido Fire Department Fire Station 3 to aid in the live monitoring.
Nearby residents will get advance evacuation orders before Wednesday’s burning. The destruction will temporarily close parts of Interstate 15 on Wednesday as well.
Authorities first got indication of the bomb materials when Jakubec’s gardener Mario Garcia, 49, suffered injuries during a blast in Jakubec’s backyard. The home in the 1900 block of Via Scott was being rented by Jakubec.
