Cam Newton Cleared in NCAA Investigation

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Cam Newton has been cleared in the NCAA investigation. The NCAA and Auburn ruled that Cecil Newton and Kenny Rogers, “worked together to actively market the student-athlete as a part of a pay-for-play scenario in return for Newton’s commitment to attend college and play football.”
On Monday, the NCAA found that a violation of Newton’s amateur status had occurred. On Tuesday, Auburn ruled Cam Newton ineligible. Thereafter, Newton was ruled eligible by the N.C.A.A.’s reinstatement committee.
Cam Newton is now eligible to play in a possible BCS National Championship. As broke on LALATE Sunday, Newton’s achievements last Saturday propelled Auburn into the number 1 standing for this week’s BCS Rankings. Auburn now has to defeat South Carolina in the Southeastern Conference championship game this Saturday.

Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president for academic and membership affairs, explained his findings in a news statement this week. “Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time, we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement. From a student-athlete reinstatement perspective, Auburn University met its obligation. … Under this threshold, the student-athlete has not participated while ineligible.”
Critics say that the NCAA rules still remain unclear and in need of revision.
Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs issued the following statement to news: “We are pleased that the NCAA has agreed with our position that Cam Newton has been and continues to be eligible to play football at Auburn University. We appreciate the diligence and professionalism of the NCAA and its handling of this matter.”
The NCAA said it will continue to investigate the matter, specifically as to Cecil Newton.
As previously reported on LALATE, Newton remains the Heisman frontrunner, a Manning Award nominee, and is expected to declare for the NFL draft after the season.
