Irvin Kershner Dead at 87

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Irvin Kershner is dead at 87. Irvin Kershner’s death was confirmed by goddaughter Adriana Santini. Kershner died at home in Los Angeles after an undisclosed illness.
Kershner is perhaps best known for directing the second Star Wars film, The Empires Strikes Back. He also directed the 1983 Bond film Never Say Never Again with Sean Connery; Kershner had directed Connery 17 years earlier in A Fine Madness. To date, Kershner remains the only American to ever direct a Bond flick. In 1990 he also directed Robocop II.
Kershner had taught at USC where he met Lucas in the 1960s. He called Lucas the “best producer” he had ever worked with. Why did Lucas choose him for the film? “Of all the younger guys around, all the hot shots, why me?” he said to Lucas. “I remember he said, ‘Well, because you know everything a Hollywood director is supposed to know, but you’re not Hollywood.’ I liked that.” Kershner got his early break from Roger Corman on Stakeout on Dope Street (1958).
Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Irvin Kershner will be greatly missed.
