CORAL GABLES (LALATE) – Is the Post Office open on Veterans Day? You have mail, you’re heading to the Post Office today November 11, 2010, and you are wondering if there is mail service? That answer is no.
You might want to head to FEDEX instead.
Veterans Day, today November 11, 2010, is a federal holiday. And like all federal holidays, all federal offices, agencies, Court houses, and service centers are closed. Those include Post Offices, pursuant to federal law.
But if you aren’t sure which day is a federal holiday each year, OPM (U.S. Office of Personnel Management), issues that year’s schedule. And while Federal holidays don’t change year to year, when the holiday falls, what day the holiday is observed, does change.
That exact confusion strikes Veterans Day in 2011 (that will be observed on Monday November 12, 2011).
So if you want to send mail, private carriers like FEDEX, UPS, and air carriers are open today.
And what other federal holidays are left for 2010? Only two remain. There will be no mail on Thursday November 25, Thanksgiving Day, Friday December 24, and Saturday December 25. Says OPM “December 25, 2010 (the legal public holiday for Christmas Day), falls on a Saturday. For most Federal employees, Friday, December 24, will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See 5 U.S.C. 6103(b).)”
