Samuel Hengel Dead at 15

MARINETTE, WIS (LALATE) – Samuel Hengel aka Sam Hengel (photo below) is dead. Samuel Hengel, the Marinette High School hostage-taker, had died. Samuel Hengel’s death was confirmed by law enforcement; Hengel had shot himself Monday evening following resolution of the hostage situation.

As reported earlier on LALATE, Samuel Hengel had released five of the 23 student-hostages Monday evening after they asked to use the restroom. Hengel later released the remaining students along with teacher Valerie Burd. When SWAT officers stormed the classroom, Samuel Hengel shot himself with a single gunshot. By Tuesday morning, police would not confirm Hengel’s condition.

Moments ago, officials confirmed Hengel has died. His parents have not issued a statement about their son’s death.

Police officials and fellow students are baffled by Hengel’s death. They say this is not a case of a bullying victim. Zach Campbell told the CBS Early Show today that Hengel had a lot of friends. “Nobody bullied him, he had friends, you couldn’t really tell anything was wrong.” Hostages also told news that they believed Hengel wouldn’t hurt them. “He didn’t really want to hurt anybody. He was just very depressed, you could tell.”

During the hostage standoff, Samuel Hengel told the teacher not to speak with him. He laughed when hostages told him stories about fishing and hunting. Another victim told WBAY that Samuel Hengel appeared “too calm”, had “nothing planned”, and clearly had no intentions of hurting his friends and classmates.

Police chief Jeff Skorik says he has no explanation for what happened. He hopes that his investigation will determine what drove Sam to kill himself. But as of Tuesday, the case is unsolved.

“As far as what caused this, it seems to be a mystery,” Skorik said. “We have not been able to identify anything that precipitated this incident… We have learned nothing more on the reasoning behind this. I’m sure that information will all be available once we complete the investigation.”

Hengel reportedly had two guns, and fired from both, a .22 caliber and a 9 mm semiautomatic. He was stocked with gym bag filled with additional ammunition and a knife.

City councilman Bradley Behrendt remained near the campus during the hostage standoff. The campus boasts an 800-student enrollment; the school had undergone upgrades in recent years but didn’t have metal detectors.

Jenifer Ringer Remarks by Alastair Macaulay Prompt Controversy

Jenifer Ringer Remarks by Alastair Macaulay Prompt Controversy

NEW YORK (LALATE) – Alastair Macaulay is under fire for his Jenifer Ringer comments. Alastair Macaulay’s remarks about Jenifer Ringer headline a new review in the New York Times entitled “Timeless Alchemy, Even When No One Is Dancing.”

He was sent to review the New York City Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker. Instead, he adds comments about how fat he thought the ballerina looks. And despite the “review”, Ringer looks wonderful.

Macaulay says the performance didn’t “feel … like an opening night”. Why?

“Jenifer Ringer, as the Sugar Plum Fairy, looked as if she’d eaten one sugar plum too many; and Jared Angle, as the Cavalier, seems to have been sampling half the Sweet realm. They’re among the few City Ballet principals who dance like adults, but without adult depth or complexity.”

Ringer, in fact, has previously confessed to having won the battle against anorexia and compulsive eating. In a Working Mother magazine profile, she admitted her struggles despite a critical industry. Two years ago, she brought a new joy into her life, her daughter Grace.

As one commentator on another site said of the article, “She looks like a beautiful ballerina to me.”

NFL Will Refund if Lockout Occurs

NFL Will Refund if Lockout Occurs

NEW YORK (LALATE) – Don’t worry about a lockout. The NFL promised refunds today if any game, or even the entire season, is canceled next year due a lockout. Players, teams, and fans have been on CBA (collective bargaining agreement) watch for months. The current CBA expires in March, prompting concerns that part, or all, of the 2011-2012 NFL season could be in jeopardy.

Today, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell eased concerns.

The NFL understood that fans might have foregone ticket purchases with a threat of lockout. So today, Goodell announced a “complete ticket refund policy” for the 2011 NFL season. The policy has benefits but restrictions. It applies to the preseason, not just the regular season. But it concerns only general admission purchases. Issues concerning private suites, club seats, and similar VIP treatments will be handled by each team.

Goodell told news today that fans who want to see NFL games next season through general admission should know that they will have the option to have complete refund or credit to previous games if any game that is “cancelled due to a work stoppage.”

“We are working hard to secure an agreement with the union that is fair and forward-thinking to ensure our game is sound and strong well into the future,” Goodell said in a news statement today. “We know we will reach an agreement at some point. We all want football without interruption, but our fans are entitled to know now that they would receive refunds if any games are cancelled.”

Jenny McCarthy to Rock New Years Eve Times Square

NEW YORK (LALATE) – Jenny McCarthy won’t be with Jason Toohey for New Years’ Eve Times Square, at least for the ball drop. Jenny McCarthy will be with Ryan Seacrest, tapped as the new co-host of the Dick Clark annual special.

Seacrest and McCarthy? That sounds like a perfect team.

So why did the producers choose Jenny? “She is funny, relatable and high energy” said Larry Klein who co-produces with Seacrest.

Relatable has worked with Toohey also. “I ran into mystery man at Katsuya last night. What a coincidence! I made out with him again. Now I really REALLY want 2 know his name.” That is how Jenny first tweeted the spotting of her future love interest in May.

Since then, producers have fell in love with Jenny’s own hosting skills. Ryan added in a news statement today that Jenny is exceptional with live programming. “I was reminded how great Jenny is at live broadcasting when she recently stopped by my radio show. That day, with Dick’s blessing, I invited her to join us in Times Square!”

McCarthy is currently in pre-production on her new talk show for the Oprah network, a deal first revealed in May of 2009.

What Happened to Harry Smith and Maddie Rodriguez

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – What happened to Harry Smith and Maddie Rodriguez? That will be the CBS Early Show question of the day on January 3, 2011. When viewers turn in for the morning show this Janauary, Harry Smith and Maddie Rodriguez won’t be in their anchor seats. Instead, viewers will find Erica Hill and Chris Wragge, Maggy and Harry’s …. replacements.

Smith anchored CBS’ morning show from 1987 to 1996. In 2002, he was teamed up with Hannah Storm, Julie Chen and Rene Syler. Now, the final member of that four person original team is being replaced.

Where is Harry heading? CBS says Harry will now “shift his focus on hard news” apparently.

“[Harry] will shift his focus to hard news with an expanded role as primary substitute anchor on ‘The Evening News with Katie Couric,’ ‘Face the Nation,’ and ‘Sunday Morning’ while continuing to report major stories for all CBS News broadcasts” said CBS in a statement this morning.” Maggie is also staying with CBS, instead getting a “prominent and ongoing roles … [with] Dave Price.”

Behind the scenes, Jeff Glor will be the news reader, moving over from the weekend edition of the “CBS Evening News”. The weather will be handled by Marysol Castro.

The Early Show is currently third in ratings.
