Juan Williams NPR Firing Prompts Security Threat

Juan Williams NPR Firing Prompts Security Threat

WASHINGTON D.C. (LALATE) – The NPR firing of Juan Williams has prompted a security threat; now NPR has received a bomb threat less than one week after Juan Williams’ firing and Vivian Schiller’s psychiatrist remark.

NPR would not confirm to local news the receipt of the bomb threat; but the Washington Post reports the receipt Monday, via US Mail, from NPR sources. That same day, NPR reportedly sent a memo to employees warning of a general “security threat”. What prompted the threat and what is the nature and location of the threat is not detailed.

NPR spokeswoman Anna Christopher told news late yesterday that the NPR headquarters are adding “extra precautions” immediately”. Those precautions are to be “more aware” of visitors to their Washington D.C. offices and to add additional facility checks on a more routine basis.

Vivian Schiller sent an email to NPR member stations last week explaining the firing of Williams. But after taking Williams’ job, Schiller within twenty-four hours was defending her own job. Schiller went to the Atlanta Press Club on Thursday where she told attendees that Juan Williams should have kept his feeling about Muslims between himself and “his psychiatrist or his publicist”. Schiller later apologized “I spoke hastily and I apologize to Juan and others for my thoughtless remark.” Williams later denounced the remark, adding he doesn’t see a psychiatrist.

Today, Schiller is not speaking. But on Tuesday, NPR sources confirmed to the Post that Schiller has received telephone threats at her home.

Alicia C. Shepard, NPR’s Ombudsman, last week said NPR mishandled Williams’ firing. She said their website drew 7,000 comments to the firing, their email server crashed, they processed 8000 angry emails in 24 hours, and their telephone circuits were flooded. “The overwhelming majority are angry, furious, outraged. They want NPR to hire him back immediately. If NPR doesn’t, they want all public funding of public radio to stop. They promise to never donate again. They are as mad as h-ll, and want everyone to know it. It was daunting to answer the phone and hear so much unrestrained anger.”

Indonesia Earthquakes Continue Today, More Feared Dead

Indonesia Earthquakes Continue Today

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – More Indonesia earthquakes continue to strike today as the death toll from earlier earthquakes and the tsunami continues to rise. Today Indonesia earthquakes registering over 5.0 magnitude continue to rock the region southwest of Sumatra, the same location that has suffered over a dozen earthquakes in excess of 5.0 magnitude within three days.

Indonesia officials surveying earthquake and tsunami damage fear the death toll could rise with over 400 persons still missing. Between the quake and the 10-foot tall tsunami, 154 persons are confirmed dead. Officials confirm Monday’s earthquake, that registered 13 miles below the ocean’s floor, is the same fault line that triggered the 2004 quake and resulted in an Indian Ocean tsunami, killing 230,000 residents.

Yet to be determined is the lives of passengers at sea during this week’s tsunami. Local fisherman are combing the coast while investigators remain at sea.

After Monday’s 7.7 earthquake, three earthquakes struck in excess of 5.0. On Tuesday, four earthquakes struck in excess of 5.0. But today, three quakes in excess 5.0 struck. Today’s quakes continue to strike the same region, less than two hundred miles west of Bengkulu and Padang, and roughly five hundred miles west of the Jakarta.

Alex Smith Injury Prompts Troy Smith to Start

Alex Smith Injury Prompts Troy Smith to Start

SAN FRANCISCO (LALATE) – Alex Smith’s separate shoulder was updated as a 2-3 week injury today; Troy Smith will start Sunday. Alex Smith’s injury came during the third quarter of last Sunday’s Panthers showdown. Smith is in London with players this week; on Monday he remained in a London hospital still in a sling. The 49ers are in town to play the Broncos before a London crowd.

Smith could next return November 14 against the Rams. The team is currently 1-6 for the season.

The 49ers fell 23-20 against the Panthers after David Carr filled in for Smith. But Carr will not start Sunday. Head coach Mike Singletary tells news that Carr “understands” that he was not selected as Sunday’s started, rather Troy Smith who has never played a 49ers game.

In fact, Smith has only had two professional starts. Each was in his first season in the league, three years ago. Despite winning the Heisman at Ohio State, Smith has yet to get much action on the field with the Ravens or the 49ers, who he joined in December. Carr went 5 for 13 Sunday, produced a mere 67 yards, one interception, and no touchdown.

Joshua Bumpus Fights Off Rufus Bowman and Wins

CINCINNATI (LALATE) – Joshua Bumpus’ attack by Rufus Bowman started with Bowman shooting Bumpus; it ended with a transvestite war on the streets that Cincinnati police say they have never seen.

Joshua Bumpus was on the streets of Cincinnati near McMicken Avenue on July 13 when Bowman approached Bumpus. Bumpus and Bowman headed to a nearbye alley. That’s when Bowman, 17, shot Bumpus randomly. Bumpus suffered a gunshot through the arm; the bullet lodged in his torso, close to his rib, reports Cincinnati.com. Bumpus could have been left for dead. Bowman thought at that point his attack was done.

Bowman had no idea was about to follow.

Bumpus, with a bullet still in him, grabbed Bowman by the hair and tossed him. He grabbed the gun and took control of the situation. But Bumpus and Co weren’t done with Bowman. Suddenly a sea of transvestites working the block descended and came to the aid, and offense, of Bumpus against Bowman. Each transvestite reportedly matched Bumpus’ frame. Bump stands 6′1” and 290 lbs. Other transvestites ran and flagged down local Police Officer Dave Kennedy.

“The cops said it was one of their more memorable arrests of their lives” says an investigator.

Bowman had a previous 2009 arrest that had barred him from carrying a gun. On Tuesday, Bowman pleaded guilty to a felony assault; Bowman will now serve three years in prison.

Mount Merapi Eruption Kills 30

Mount Merapi Eruption Kills 30

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Mount Merapi neighboring residents returned home today after the Merapi volcano eruption killed at least 30 this week. Mount Merapi’s slopes is home to thousands of residents; yet, despite living next to an active volcano erupting since September, residents were somewhat content to return to their homes today.

Mandatory evacuations earlier this week sent thousands of residents fleeing for their lives. But even returning to their homes, residents know that ash levels are suggest that new eruptions in are possible. In fact, the true death toll is still much unknown; many reports put it at least 30 dead, while British reports put it at 25 persons.

And when residents return home, many won’t find much. District official Hadi Purnomo says everything from homes to trees are “scorched” with life covered in heavy, dense dark ash. The chief of Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, (who goes by a single name) Surono admits energy is built up; he says predicting the next volcanic eruption is next to impossible.

And even without eruptions, vulcanologists say a “pyroclastic flow” is still possible. A “pyroclastic flow” is a mix of heat and deadly gases fueled by dense heat and strong pressure in the volcano.

So why would residents return to homes destroyed, just to risk their lives further? Locals say they are returning home because they don’t have enough belongings in the shelter, they want to feed their cows (if they survived), and they want to survey the destruction. And with reports that hundreds stayed back and didn’t follow evacuation orders originally, the death toll could still rise.

LimeWire Closed – Shut Down by Federal Court

LimeWire Closed - Shut Down by Federal Court

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – LimeWire has been shut down by a Federal Court; the closing of the LimeWire operated by Lime Group is the result of a Federal injunction against the website. LimeWire executives say they are set to launch a new service in the coming weeks. Details about the new service are still unknown.

Judge Kimba Wood’s ruling was not an overnight decision but the result of a 4-year old case. LimeWire, despite the closure years earlier of Napster, had reportedly generated 50 million users monthly. LimeWire must disable “searching, downloading, uploading, file trading and/or file distribution functionality” said Wood’s ruling.

RIAA said of the decision yesterday “For the better part of the last decade, LimeWire and Gorton have violated the law. The court has now signed an injunction that will start to unwind the massive piracy machine that LimeWire and Gorton used to enrich themselves immensely.”

LimeWire chief executive George Searle said in a news statement the following. “We are extremely proud of our pioneering history and have, for years, worked hard to bridge the gap between technology and content rights holders,” Searle said. “However, at this time, we have no option but to cease further distribution and support of our software.”

Searle thanked users of the service and said “our team of technologists and music enthusiasts are creating a completely new music service that puts you back at the center of your digital music experience. We’ll be sharing more details about our new service and look forward to bringing it to you in the future,” he said.
