LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Indonesia was struck by more earthquake today; Indonesia suffered four major earthquakes yesterday in the Sumatra and Kepulauan Mentawai region. While today’s earthquakes have lowered in magnitude, they still register 5.3.
Yesterday, Indonesia was first struck by a 7.3 earthquake. Five hours later, the same region was hit by a 6.1 quake; three hours later another 6.2 struck. All three quakes on Monday were centered roughly one hundred fifty miles south of Padang, in the Sumatra region of Indonesia. They were approximately five hundred miles west of Jakarta and a hundred miles west of Bengkulu.
Today the shaking returned with two aftershocks hitting again closer to Padang, registering over 5.0 magnitude. At only one hundred miles from Padang, the aftershocks registered a depth of 16 miles below the earth’s surface.
In other news, a 5.4 earthquake struck today off the coast of Chile. The quake could be felt on the mainland of Chile near Castro and San Carlos de Bariloche.
