EXCLUSIVE – ATLANTA (LALATE) – A U.S. Senate probe demanded questions from Eddie Long about the same exact subject levied by four plaintiffs last week, LALATE can exclusively report. Wrapped up in the Eddie Long (pictures below) scandal last week were allegations that Long has had a continual practice of using church funds of co-defendant New Birth Missionary Baptist Church for personal matters, whatever those matters might be. That was precisely the question put upon Bishop Long by the U.S. Senate previously, LALATE has exclusively learned.
Long had called a U.S. Senate request put upon him in 2007 as an “attack on our religious freedom and privacy rights”. In fact, the demand by the U.S. Senate had nothing to do with religion or privacy. Rather, the U.S. Senate wrote Eddie Long that it was concerned with the operation of federal tax exempt entity and had questions over what funds were being used for. The inquiry put upon him in 2007 was brought by the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Finance and written by Senator Charles Ernest “Chuck” Grassley. It was the direct result, said Grassley, of news reports at the time; those reports details Long’s alleged spending habits. Long was at around the time reported to be driving a Bentley and living in a mansion.

Grassley took issue of Long’s news coverage in fall 2007. Grassley demanded proof from Long that he did not use Church funds between 2001 and 2007 for personal matters, did not use jets for personal use. But last week, four plaintiffs claimed that Long took them on private jets around the globe even for a birthday, housed them for free in church property, gave them cash gifts and jewelry. The plaintiffs assert that New Birth shifted church funds to Long who then used the funds on the teens.

“Defendant Long told Plaintiff LeGrande that he expected Plaintiff LeGrande to go to school … and have no girlfriends….Plaintiff LeGrande abandoned his plans to pursue a collegiate basketball career and applied to Beluah [to prepare to enter the ministry]. …Defendant LeGrande would engage in intimate … contact with Plaintff LeGrande at the Harvell House” were among the allegations brought by Spencer LeGrande last week. But LeGrande’s allegations include that Long took his Spiritual Sons on private jets, put them up in lavish hotels, and flew them to meet celebrities.

Long was asked by the U.S. Senate proof that he did not engage in the “personal use of [church] assets for the years 2001 to the present.” The Senate’s demand came roughly 4 yeas after Bishop Long received a $1 million federal grant from the Bush Administration. Click HERE for more.
