LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Teacher Rigoberto Ruelas has been found dead at age 39. Rigoberto Ruelas’ death has shocked students at Miramonte Elementary School in South Gate and prompted a cease and desist demand against the Los Angeles Times publication.
Ruelas was suppose to show up to class last week but called for a substitute on Monday and Tuesday. When he didn’t show on Wednesday, his family reported him missing. On Sunday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office reported that they found Ruelas near Big Tujunga Canyon during training exercises. His body was roughly 100 feet underneath a bridge and close to his car. Investigators have ruled it a homicide.
Fox News Los Angeles reports that Ruelas, before his suicide, told family members he was upset about a Los Angeles Times publication on their website of his recent poor scoring on a teacher exam. FOX reports that United Teachers Los Angeles issued a statement upon the publication “to take the so-called `teacher effectiveness’ scores off their website and cease and desist from publishing any further scores for individual teachers now or in the future.” In an article posted here, the Times makes no mention of the family’s remarks nor of the demand by United Teachers Los Angeles.
