Mike Edwards of Electric Light Orchestra Dead at 62

LONDON (LALATE) — Mike Edwards of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is dead at age 62. Mike Edwards’ death is confirmed by police today, his cause of death revealed as a car crash with a hay bale.
Mike Edwards played the cello in the Brit rock bank Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) between 1972 to 1975 until being replaced by Melvyn Gale. But over the weekend, Edwards was killed by a runaway hay bale the weighed in excess of 1300 lbs. Sgt. Steve Walker of the Devon and Cornwall Police said Edwards was killed after the hay bale came tumbling down the hill and crashing into his vehicle.
The crash was September 3. Police say the bale crushed Edwards’ van killing him instantly. “This was a tragic accident,” said Sgt. Steve Walker to BBC London. ELO delivered 50 million album and has dozens of top 20 hits. Bev Bevan said of Edwards today that he was “a chubby little chap with a big black beard and the most amazing grin.”
The accident was on A381 in Devon. Initially investigators weren’t so sure it was Edwards, issuing the following statement last weekend, “This was a tragic accident and we have now identified the victim as Michael Edwards, a founder member of ELO. We have used photographs and YouTube footage to identify him but we now need help contacting his family for formal identification. We don’t believe he was ever married and we have identified an ex-girlfriend but she is currently abroad.”
Funeral arrangements have been announced. Mike Edwards will be greatly missed.
