Disagreements on How Many People at Glenn Beck Rally Yield Bizarre Crowd Estimates

Disagreements on How Many People at Glenn Beck Rally Yield Bizarre Crowd Estimates

WASHINGTON (LALATE) – Disagreements on how many people were at the Glenn Beck rally were predictable to most political insiders. But are these news estimates polarizing to Beck fans and critics? While Beck came under criticism for the non-political rally even before Saturday, leaving Beck having to defend the message of Restoring Honor before any persons took to the Lincoln Memorial, the debate over crowd estimates is fueling across news reports Sunday. But this time, some news estimates are so low that readers are shouting foul. The question is – who is correct?

Beck pulled a permit that allowed him to have 300,000 in attendance at the rally, he had hoped 100,000 would show up. On the low end, AP put it at tens of thousands, writing “At his rally with tens of thousands on the steps of Lincoln Memorial, Beck used the closing lines of then-candidate Obama’s campaign stump speech of 2008. “

CBS News reported the Beck crowd was 87,000. CBS News told readers that it used photo imagery courtesy of a website called AirPhotosLive.com to estimate the numbers for its news report. “AirPhotosLive.com gave its estimate a margin of error of 9,000, meaning between 78,000 and 96,000 people attended the rally. The photos used to make the estimate were taken at noon Saturday, which is when the company estimated was the rally’s high point.”

Strangely, of the news reports on the Beck Rally, not one seemed to over-estimate the crowd; no news report seemed to put crowd size larger than Beck and organizers.

Readers responded poorly to underestimated crowd size news reports. One wrote “Shame on you … for downplaying (knowingly I might add) the rally attendance at which the duty officers put attendance around 300,000 – which seems about right based on the crowd size. ” Another wrote “[You] will be adding the additional 100,000 rally attendees shortly.”

The New York Times reports that event organizers put it at 500,000. And how did FOX News handle the situation? It just avoided the answer all together, reporting the rally simply “huge”.

In a rushed transcript of his speech Saturday, Albert Pujols told the crowd “I’m very honored and humbled to be here today. I want to thank Glenn for giving me the opportunity to be here, and share with you guys not just the baseball, like Tony said, but the things that we do – off the field – which a lot of people don’t get to see.”

Pujols thanked his wife and his organizers. “Obviously, there are so many people that I need to thank for this award, or share this award with. One of them is here today, my wife Deidre who is standing back there, and my family. Two people back in St. Louis – Todd Perry and Jen Cooper – they run the Pujols Family Foundation. They work so hard to make our Foundation the best, and I thank them for that. Our job through the Foundation is to be involved with kids with Down syndrome and adults with Down syndrome, as well as going back to the Dominican Republic with the mission trips, giving back. We can’t forget where we came from.”

Mount Sinabung Volcano Erupts as Sumatra Area Evacuates

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – The Mount Sinabung Volcano eruption has left two dead and thousands under evacuations as Sinabung emerged from volcanic inactivity this weekend to send smoke miles into the air.

The last time Mount Sinabung exemplified any volcanic activity was nearly 400 years ago in 1600. Now dust is blanketing the region as the  Directorate of Vulcanology has increased volcanic danger alert warning systems to their highest levels. On Sunday, Muhammad Irsal with the Red Cross confirmed to local news that two persons have died from the volcanic eruption. Their causes of death are respiratory problems.

Red Cross officials now put evacuation numbers at 18,000. As reported previously on LALATE, evacuation centers have been set up in government buildings and places of worship. Now Tarigan, an disaster relief official, confirms that evacuation numbers could still grow by Sunday evening.

Irsal tells news “At midnight, there was a strong shock – believed to be a volcanic earthquake. Immediately after, we saw lava come down from the peak of Sinabung, and fire began to burn the forest at the foot of the mountain.” Surono, head of the region’s nation volcano disaster alert system, updated news today that “Previously, there was no significant activity at the Mount Sinabung volcano, so the monitoring did not take priority since the 1600s…We’re recommending that the residents remain at the evacuation centres until further notice”

A local person tells news that smoke density has decreased but the remains of sulfur in the air has increased. There are said to be dozens, if not hundreds, of Indonesian Red Cross volunteers aiding local evacuation efforts.

Cricket Cheating Scandal - Mazhar Majeed Report Claims Fixing by at Lords Test

NEW DELHI (LALATE) -  Bookie Mazhar Majeed claims a cricket cheating scandal was headed by Salman Butt and orchestrated by Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif. On Sunday Scotland Yard confirmed the arrest of 35 year old man on conspiracy to defraud bookmakers. Scotland Yard would not identify if the arrest man is Majeed (who is also 35-years old).

Now officials, players, and insiders are speaking out about the massive alleged cricket cheating scandal that was uncovered in a sting operation undercover report by News of the World. Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif delivered no-balls Thursday and Friday. Were they fixed?

Asif says he has spoken to team offiicals. “The management have told us something happened, but not what. The management will tell us more later.”

Majeed says in the News of the World footage that he would fix three no-balls with the Pakistan team. “[They] have been organised”. “This is exactly what’s going to happen, you’re going to see these three things happen. I’m telling you, if you play this right you’re going to make a lot of money, believe me.”

Pakistan fast bowlers did produce three no-ballers. Amir and Asif had two no-balls on Thursday and then a third on Friday. Were they fixed? Majeed says they were and claims to have seven players in his circle of alleged fixing.

“I’ve been doing it [match-fixing] with them for about two-and-a-half years and we’ve made masses of money …  I manage 10 of the players, I do all their affairs like contracts, sponsorship, marketing, everything really. The players would never tell anybody else. They were the ones who actually approached me about this. This is the beauty of it. I was friends with them for four, five years and then they said this happens. These poor boys need to [do this]. They’re paid peanuts.”

A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police  said tonight “Following information received from the News of the World we have arrested a 35-year old man on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers.”

Majeed claimed Butt was the ringleader of the matchfixing for Lords Test. Majeed claims the circle of cheats extended to others. NOTW explains that  “Majeed identified young Pakistan captain Salman Butt as the ringleader of the band of cheats. He also named wicket keeper Kamran Akmal and boasted he had a total of SEVEN corrupt cricketers in his pocket, all banking huge sums from bookies and betting syndicates.” Click HERE for the video and allegations.

Mount Sinabung Volcano Erupts as Sumatra Area Evacuates

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – The Mount Sinabung Volcano has erupted today causing Sumatra residents of the northern region to evacuate. The Sinabung volcano has not erupted in 400 years, the last time showing volcanic activity in the year 1600.

Now as many as 12,000 residents near the northern Sumatra volcano have been evacuated from the region often dubbed the Pacific Ring of Fire. Surono, head of the region’s nation volcano disaster alert system, told AFP today “Initially we thought the ash and smoke were triggered by rain but now we know the driving pressure was from magma. It’s clearly dangerous so we’ve raised the warning to the highest level, or red level.”

Smoke is said to be spreading 1500 meters into the air. Surono (who local news notes goes by the single name as “Surono”) says residents under evacuation tonight are being housed in government building and houses of worship. “The situation is under control. Emergency response teams are already on the scene,” said Priyadi Kardono of the National Disaster Management Agency.

Evacuations as of 9 PM PST Saturday are for a 3.7 mile radius around the volcano. Yet with no data on the volcano in 400 years, officials say they are monitoring the situation with no data on predicting its advances for residents.

Glenn Beck Crowd Draws Massive Numbers and Debate on Crowd Estimates

Glenn Beck Crowd Draws Massive Numbers

WASHINGTON (LALATE) – Glenn Beck’s crowd drew massive numbers for today’s 828 Rally; along with it came news debates on crowd size. Photos of the Glenn Beck crowd show the National Mall a virtual blanketing from the National World War II Memorial to Lincoln’s Memorial. And while critics and supporters are quick to debate initial estimates, the Glenn Beck crowd is believed to be far in excess of 500,000. Previously Bill O’Reilly told Beck that he would turn over his Fox News time slot if the event turned out more than 100,000 people. That certainly was the case today.

Beck told the crowd today to “use today to change your life… It’s what we do from here that matters …. If you restore honor in your own life, we will leave freedom better than we found it.”

“I know that many in this country think I am a fearmonger. It is not a label I think applies. I do talk about frightening things. But I don’t think the man who saw the iceberg on the Titanic and said, ‘It’s an iceberg’ was a fearmonger. He was warning the people on the ship!”

Beck honored St Louis Albert Pujols for his charity work. Pujols was introduced to the crowd by Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa.

Sarah Palin spoke to the crowd about her son Track. “Say what you want to say about me, but I raised a combat vet. You can’t take that away from me. “May this day be the change point,” Palin said. “Look around you. You are not alone. You are Americans.”

Organizers had expected 100,000 to show, pulled a permit for 300,000. Scott Wong (Politico) reports that Beck told the rally’s crowd that he heard estimates were between 300,000 and 500,000; Beck qualifies those news reports adding, “and if that’s coming from the media, God only knows.”

AP reported only tens of thousands in attendance, claims Wong. For a picture of the crowd, click HERE
