Peter Lenz Crash – Lenz Death Sparks Age Debate

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – As soon as the Peter Lenz crash with Xavier Zayat hit news Sunday, Lenz’s death prompted an age debate, whether racing circuit should not be open to 12 and 13 year olds. Lenz’s circuit sanctions races across the U.S. for motorcycle racers ages 12 to 18.
New details about Lenz’s crash and death were revealed this morning. Lenz fell off his bike during Sunday’s warmup lap. He immediately put his hands up to alert drivers that he was down. Zayat, 12, couldn’t stop and hit Lenz. Hours later, Lenz was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Lenz was only a 7th grader. And while he was top in his sport, he was only 81 lbs and 4′11′. “He sat up. He raised his hands so the other riders could see him” says a witness on Monday’s CBS Early Show. “Unfortunately, he was fear the front of the pack and the rest of the pack was coming around that same corner. A couple riders, one behind each other, didn’t see each other. He turned to stand up to be more visible. Unfortunately, that’s when he was hit.”
A message on his Facebook page read after his death “Peter passed away early this morning when he was apparently struck by another rider. He passed doing what he loved and had his go fast face on as he pulled onto the track. The world lost one of its brightest lights today. God Bless Peter and the other rider involved. 45 is on another road we can only hope to reach. Miss you kiddo.”
The Facebook message was signed “Dad”.
The Lenz family thereafter released the following statement: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss, but know that Peter is racing even faster in the sky. Our thoughts and prayers are now with the other racer and his family, who were also involved in this tragedy.”
Speedway CEO Jeff Belskus said of Lenz’s death that “Our hearts go out to the parents, family and friends of Peter Lenz. Words cannot adequately express the sadness of our company and our employees about this tragic incident, and Peter is in our thoughts and prayers.”
Lenz had four wins this season, five podium finishes, and was first in points in MD250H classification. For more, click here
