Broadcaster Gus Johnson Not Dead

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Did Gus Johnson (CBS Sports) die? Gus Johnson, the broadcaster, is not dead. The Gus Johnson death confusion Saturday was sparked by confusion coming via Twitter, confusion between Gus Johnson the basketball player and Gus Johnson the broadcaster.
On Friday, the late Gus Johnson’s was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Johnson died in 1987 from an inoperable brain tumor, a five-time NBA All-Star from Akron Central-Hower High School.
On Saturday just after noon PST, LeBron James tweeted “R.I.P Gus Johnson”. SB Nation speculates that “some [twitter followers of James] saw the latter tweet without seeing the former [tweet]” and “thought LeBron James was breaking the news that broadcaster Gus Johnson had died”.
Gus Johnson of CBS Sports was not the subject of that tweet, rather Akron’s Gus Johnson. LeBron over one hour earlier had tweeted “Also Congratulations to Akron’s very own Gus Johnson on being inducted on the HOF. Seen his pics as a kid around the city growing up.”
Perry Johnson said Friday “My brother was a very special man. He never picked up a weight. He looked like a Greek god. He just commanded a presence. He was just awesome. I want to thank you guys, the NBA, the Naismith Hall of Fame and everybody here. Thank you so much.”
