Roman Polanski Free – No Extradition for Samantha Geimer Case

BERNE (LALATE) – Roman Polanski is a free man. The Samantha Geimer (aka Samantha Gailey) case is effectively over after a Swiss court ruled moments ago that it will not grant extradition to U.S. officials for their Polanski case in California.
In a news conference moments ago, Swiss Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf told international news that “He’s a free man”. Polanski will not face extradition to California for the 1977 case.

“If this were the case, Roman Polanski would actually have already served his sentence and therefore both the proceedings on which the U.S. extradition request is founded and the request itself would have no foundation.”
The Justice found fault in the American application for extradition. The U.S. Justice Department and Polanski both had no comment.
“He is a free man since 1130 today. He can go to France or to Poland, anywhere where he will not be arrested” said the Justice.
In 2008 Samantha Geimer said continual discussion of the details of her case decades later by prosecutors “causes harm to me, my husband and children”. Roman Polanksi had sought dismissal of the charges on January 21, 2009 but the court said he needs to appear in person. Geimer says that’s a “a cruel joke”.
Months ago, Charlotte Lewis made her own allegations about Polanski.

Polanski fled the U.S. in 1978 and hasn’t been in the country since. In 2002 he won the Oscar for The Pianist.
Greimer in 2009 told the court in a written statement she is opposed to continuation of the matter:
“If Polanski cannot stand before the court to make this request, I, as the victim, can and I, as the victim do. I have urged that this matter come to a formal legal end. I have urged that the district attorney and the court dismiss these charges.”
“… I am no longer a 13-year-old child. I have dealt with the difficulties of being a victim, have surmounted and surpassed them with one exception.
“Every time this case is brought to the attention of the Court, great focus is made of me, my family, my mother and others. That attention is not pleasant to experience and is not worth maintaining over some irrelevant legal nicety, the continuation of the case.”
