On Sunday, Tiger Woods announced he had a back problem – a bulging disk. But by the time McMurry got to the condition, it was called something else.
The Daily News called the remark “The Golf Channel turned into the Spice Channel”. McMurray corrected herself after the error and said she was referring to the “disk in his upper back”. McMurry, who is blonde, has worked with WCBS-TV Channel 2 in New York. Also over the weekend, the USA Ryder Cup golf team captain from 2008 Paul Azinger said he knew the solution for the back problem: “a good Swedish massage”
Woods told press Sunday: “I’ve been playing with a bad neck for about a month… I’ve been playing through it. I can’t play through it anymore…. I might have a bulging disk.”
Save Your Aching Back and Neck: A Patient’s Guide, by Dr. Stewart Eidelson, explains what a bulging disc is:
“Disc disorders are contained or non-contained. A bulging disc is an example of a contained disc disorder. A bulging disc has not broken open; the nucleus pulposus (new-klee-us pul-poe-sis) remains contained within the anulus fibrosus (an-you-lus fye-bro-sis). Abulging disc could be compared to a volcano prior to eruption and may be a precursor to herniation. The disc may protrude into the spinal canal without breaking open. The gel-like interior (nucleus pulposus) does not leak out. The disc remains intact except a small bubble pops out attached to the disc.”
