PHOTO. Here is a picture of Gail Lumet Buckley, Lena Horn’s daughter. Gail Lumet Buckley (Gail Horne Jones) is a journalist who narrated a special for American Masters on PBS and has been quoted in the Los Angeles Times, Vogue, the New York Daily News, and The New York Times.
Lena Horne died Sunday at Cornell Medical Center in New York, confirmed by son-in-law, Kevin Buckley. Her cause of death was not released. In 1947, Horne married Lennie Hayton, her first MGM film was “Panama Hattie”. By 1945 she was earning $1,000 a week.
Gail’s books include “American Patriots: The Story of Blacks in the Military from the Revolution to Desert Storm”, “The Hornes: An American Family” and “Jubilee: The Emergence of African-American Culture”
Lena Horne would tell press in 1990: “The whole thing that made me a star was the war. Of course the black guys couldn’t put Betty Grable’s picture in their footlockers. But they could put mine.”
