MAP! Here is a map of Niger where a coup has erupted against President Mamadou Tandja. The Coup in Niger has placed President Tandja in peril reports local press.

Tanja has ruled for over a decade. He’s currently 71. But recently in August 2009 a new rule change allowed him to continue his term longer than normally permitted. Tanja closed down the parliament and the constitutional court.

The country rich in uranium is in West Africa.

A senior presidential official for Tandja tells AP simply “All I can say is that it would appear that Tandja is not in a good position” with reports that gunfire has been shot at his office in the presidential palace.
