In the first hours after Nodar’s crash, press weren’t sure what exactly had happened. But now we know that Nodar Kumaritashvili had already advised his father:

“He told me: I will either win or die. But that was youthful bravado, he couldn’t be seriously talking about death.”

Nodar was worried about the track and his father tells AP that the race officials used his son’s life to test the track. “They tested that track on my son” he reveals Monday.

In the days since the crash first broke Friday, Nodar Kumaritashvili’s father has continued to deliver more details about his son’s final conversation.

To the WSJ, the luger’s father said Sunday:

“He called me before the Olympics, three days ago, and he said, ‘Dad, I’m scared of one of the turns ‘.I said, ‘Put your legs down on the ice to slow down,’ but he said if he started the course he would finish it. … He was brave.”

To AP, he said Monday:

“He told me: Dad, I really fear that curve. I’m a former athlete myself, and I told him: ‘You just take a slower start.’ But he responded: `Dad, what kind of thing you are teaching me? I have come to the Olympics to try to win.’”

This comes as race officials in the Nodar Kumaritashvili luge death are allegedly casting blame on him, not their luge track. Svein Romstad, secretary general of the International Luge Federation reportedly tells press Monday:

“The opening of the track conforms to the standard that has been pretty much followed in Olympic sports since 1964. We have not experienced this in 35 years. We are unfamiliar with how to deal with this. You have a technical component, you have an emotional component.”

IOC president Jacques Rogge said Friday the death “clearly casts a shadow over these games.”
