Mina Brees, mother of Drew Brees, died of a suicide last year. But Drew Brees once threatened to sue his own mother, reports ESPN.

In 2006, Mina Brees, an attorney, was running a campaign for a Texas appeals court. The ad spots aired on Austin tv stations and featured Drew in it wearing, then, Chargers attire.

Drew Brees wouldn’t allow that telling ESPN:

“I think the major point here is that my mother is using me in a campaign, and I’ve made it known many times I don’t want to be involved.”

ESPN reported at the time:

“Drew Brees … said he got no response from his mother when he first heard about the ads and called her to ask that she stop using them.”

From there, it went to this:

“His agent sent her a letter Oct. 20 threatening legal action, he said. He called his relationship with his mother “nonexistent”…. Mina Brees also said she did not receive any messages asking her to exclude her son from her campaign.”

In November 2009, LALATE broke that Mina cause of death was ruled initially a suicide by the Grand County corner. The coroner concluded that Brees died of a substance overdose. Brees was 59.

The toxicology report took three months to release.
