Colt McCoy Injury and UPDATE!

UPDATE #5 – Colt McCoy’s shoulder injury ended his season last night but today he has won two awards. Colt McCoy’s injury update at halftime last night was not the news Texas fans wanted to hear – McCoy would not be returning to the game’s second half.
While that was the end of McCoy’s season, today Colt picks up two more honors. Earlier LALATE broke Colt’s winning of the All American Player of the Year honor. Now later today news that Colt has won the 2009 Bobby Bowden Award.
Texas announced the award today on their website:
“Senior QB Colt McCoy has been named the winner of the 2009 Bobby Bowden Award, honoring the FBS student-athlete who conducts himself as a faith model in the community, in the classroom and on the field, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has announced.” The award will be given in Irvine this coming Tuesday.
Colt says the following of the honor:
“Bobby Bowden is one of the greatest to ever coach the game. To receive an award named after him, that was really special. Then having it through the FCA and being recognized as a Christian athlete is one of the greatest awards you can win. I’m really honored and humbled to receive it.”
Other honors earned have included the following:
“the Walter Camp Football Foundation National Player of the Year Award, Maxwell Award (nation’s top player), Davey O’Brien Award (nation’s top QB) and Unitas Golden Arm Award (nation’s top senior QB). He is a unanimous All-America selection, a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, the Wooden Cup (nation’s top athlete/community) and Manning Award (nation’s top QB) and was also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year by both The Associated Press and league’s coaches.”
McCoy ends the season as the NCAA’s all-time winningest quarterback of all time. Earlier today LALATE broke that Colt won the AT&T All-America Player of the Year today. That honor is the only one chosen by fans.
“AT&T announced today that University of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy is the AT&T All-America Player of the Year, the only major college football award chosen exclusively by fans. Receiving more than 137,000 text votes, McCoy is the people’s choice for best college football player in the nation.”
Mark Ingram finished second in balloting.
Final results were as follows:
* Colt McCoy (University of Texas)
* Mark Ingram (University of Alabama)
* Ndamukong Suh (University of Nebraska)
* Tim Tebow (University of Florida)
Today McCoy will undergo more tests today. Colt McCoy’s injury was updated after halftime last ngiht with the news Texas fans didn’t want to hear – McCoy would not be returning to the second half of the BCS game.
McCoy never got his moment to shine last night. For the season, McCoy was delivering a 71% completion rate with 27 TDs, 12 INTs, and 3512 yards.
Garrett Gilbert’s replacement after McCoy’s first quarter injury resulted in an immediate implosion of the Texas offense falling to a horrid 6-24 halftime score.
But when the rookie reemerged from the lockerooom for the second half, Gilbert hit a blazing 40+ yard TD to Shipley that started one of the best runs in two quarters this year. Garrett Gilbert went from 6-24 back to 19-24, producing 3 TDs, suddenly going (overall) 15 for 37 with 171 yards.
And then, Garrett was in winning position at 21-24. But in the end, Mark Ingram, would end that run.
Colt McCoy’s injury could have given Gilbert the biggest comeback of BCS Championship history. But last night, Ingram stopped that magic.
