PHOTO! Here is a picture of Arturo Beltran Leyva of Los Zetas who is dead. Arturo Beltran Leyva is dead, the former Sinaloa Cartel member, in a shooting in Cuernavaca, outside Mexico City, confirms the Navy moments ago. Arturo Beltran Leyva was one of the top Mexican cartel leaders.

This is the first Mexican cartel leader killed since the 2002 shooting of Ramon Arellano Felix of the Tijuana Cartel. He had worked with the previously LALATE profiled Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman until his split from the Sinaloa Cartel in 2003.

Just days ago on December 3 the United States had frozen U.S.-based assets of 22 individuals and 10 companies linked to his organization. Adam Szubin, director of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control, said then:

“The Beltran Leyva Organization is responsible for acts of terrible violence in the pursuit of money. Today’s action aims to disrupt their ill-gotten gains, targeting a wide network of commercial entities used to move, launder and conceal proceeds of their crimes.”
