FN 57 Pistol 5.7 MM!
Maj Nidal Malik Hasan used a FN 57 pistol (aka the Five-Seven by FN Herstal), a 5.7 MM pistol. The FN 5.7 is a 5.7 millimeter pistol at issue in the Foot Hood shooting.
The FN57 allegedly comes in a version that goes through armor; that version is reportedly only sold to law enforcement and military customers. Other reports say rather a change in the version of ammunition, not of the actual 5.7 mm.
So how did Major Nidal Malik Hasan get an FN5.7 before his attack at Fort Hood? The Five Seven was the subject of a U.S. federal ban in 2005 that failed.
Tonight revelation that Hasan bought the FN 5.7 at at store in Kileen, Texas months ago. AP is reporting tonight “the most powerful type of ammunition for the FN 5.7 … is available only to law enforcement and military personnel… It is not clear wheat kind of ammunition” that Hasan bought.
The store has not commented. Budd Hallberg tells Statesman.com tonight “It’s …to be used in combat … What in the h-ll would a doctor have it for?”

With 11 years experience in the military and law enforcement, I laugh when I hear the term “cop killer gun/bullets” because the term is synonymous with the under-educated anti-gun pundits. The FN 5-7 pistol may have a 20 round magazine capacity, but the terminal ballistics for the round are dismal. The .40 caliber pistols that the police use are tremendously more effective. The RESTRICTED armor piercing ammo that you mention is only available to law enforcement agencies and special operations military units. Individual cops and soldiers cannont purchase it. It was not available to Mr. Hasan. Commercial ammunition has been verified by BATF to NOT penetrate police level IIIA Police body armor. The push to ban this pistol was based entirely on hype and not reality.

It seems beyond ridiculous to say that the terminal ballistics of the 5.7 are poor when a single man armed with one was able to kill 13 and wound 30+. The round is powerful and shots that hit one victim pass through with enough energy to kill a second victim. I expect to see the 5.7 banned following this tragic incident.

The shooter used a $1,100 FN5, which is a SWAT and Secret Service pistol. A normal shooter skips this model because of the ammo, but this would be the first choice for an assassin.
The second gun was a S&W revolver. This gun is a back-up in case the auto-pistol jams.
An unusual gun-combo for a shrink turned psycho, but the first choice for a professional.

I’m glad you have bloged . I’m not looking to offend but let me point out a couple things.1st it don’t matter what kinda gun it is,guns don’t kill people people kill people.2nd this religious fanatic may have lot’s of pistols at his disposal. 3rd he’s a major in the military suppose he spent any time with gun’s??? Yeah he’s a psychologist
with knowledge of guns…so tell me why did he use such a inferior caliber,it has about 200ft lbs energy at muzzle my 40 cal. has 400-500lbs energy and has proven stopping power.p s my gun came with 4 16 rnd clips and very little bounce. I will give this terrorist this he chose a caliber I haven’t heard of and a well made one, I’ve been reading ,it cycles well it looks nice a lot of money for a plinker but…I’m putting coyotes,rabbits on notice.
OH. as for this terrorist I’m thinking his firing squad will use a bigger gun.
