West Hollywood Halloween 2009!

Posted: October 31st, 2009 in Halloween by LALATE

West Hollywood Halloween 2009

DETAILS – LALATE has all the details on tonight’s West Hollywood Halloween 2009 fun. The West Hollywood Halloween Parade Carnaval has been covered in depth – from road closures, to parking changes, to arrival information, to suggestions about everything from costumes to parking – for three years on LALATE.

In fact, the parade was one of the very first LALATE stories ever. This year, move over you Sarah Palins, it’s Kate Gosselin’s year as the festivities kick into overdrive.

What are some of the top 5 things about the parade that people don’t know?

1. The parade draws thousands of international tourists.

So if you have a great costume, and join in, don’t be surprised if tons of foreigners ask you for their picture. Many people think it’s just a local West Hollywood crowd. So untrue. You will see families from across the Southland to tourists from around the globe (that make the trip just for this parade).

2. You should not arrive at 7 pm.

You need to get there early. How early? Do yourself a favor and arrive between 4 to 5. It’s heaven. Easy street parking. Clear sky. Sit yourself down and get some food or a drink and relax. And if you think there is no traffic at 5 pm, think again. Coming from Beverly Hills on Santa Monica Boulevard, you will see a parking lot of traffic even at 5 pm. This year it could be better because Halloween falls on Saturday.

3. The music is very good.

The live stage which in previous years has always been a live cover band is exceptional. It’s traditionally at San Vicente and Santa Monica.

4. You might find free drinks.

Yes, if you arrive early, look for beverage sponsors who often roam the street giving out VIP passes to enter into the free drinking area at San Vicente and Santa Monica Boulevard.

5. Everyone seems to arrive at the same time.

In the first few hours, the parade is a steady flow. Then suddenly, it gets seriously packed. People hustling to get into bars. Crowds so thick it takes you minutes to walk just a few feet. So if you don’t like packed, packed, crowds, walk the parade early!

Do yourself a favor and walk the parade early and then settle into a bar of your choice. Once you are in a venue, it’s a prize; don’t give it up. Come 11 pm, you will see the line of people unable to get into your bar.

Troy Smith Sr SONIC

Troy Smith Sr, the founder of SONIC’s fast food empire, has died. Troy Smith Sr’s funeral was held today.

Smith founded SONIC as Top Hat Root Beer Stand in Shawnee in 1953. Today it’s one of the nation’s most successful chains, with 3600 Drive Ins in 42 states. Smith is survived by two children and his wife of seven decades.

Smith was 87.

SONIC says the following about the company in a press release this week:

SONIC, America’s Drive-In (NASDAQ/NM: SONC) started as a hamburger and root beer stand in 1953 in Shawnee, Okla., called Top Hat Drive-In, and then changed its name to SONIC in 1959. The first drive-in to adopt the SONIC name is still serving customers in Stillwater, Okla. As the nation’s largest chain of drive-in restaurants, SONIC has more than 3,500 drive-ins coast to coast. More than a million customers eat at SONIC every day; and, with more drink combinations than any other quick-service restaurant – more than 168,000 – SONIC is Your Ultimate Drink Stop®.

Through a new program, Limeades for Learning, SONIC donated more than half a million dollars to public school classrooms in local communities across the country. Visit www.limeadesforlearning.com to learn more about SONIC’s commitment to education.”

Troy Smith will be greatly missed.

Sonic Corn Dog

Get your Sonic 50 cent Corn Dog for Halloween 2009! Sonic is giving away 50 cent Corn Dogs Halloween Eve. And unlike that Boo-Rito offer from Chipotle covered earlier on LALATE, you don’t have to dress up to get the offer.

The offer is from 5 to 10 pm Saturday night. Says Sonic:

“The corn dog combines what everyone is looking for on Halloween: a delicious hot dog surrounded in a sweet corn batter and fried to a crispy golden brown. Pair the corn dog with SONIC’s apple slices and 1% low-fat milk for the perfect pre-Trick or Treating meal. Kids can get their sweets and fresh fruit all in one meal.

Costumes aren’t required to get this great deal; customers of all ages can enjoy the $.50 corn dog. It’s the perfect on-the-go snack.

Sonic’s VP of Marketing explains the corn dog selection:

“The corn dog is a great value for families and our customers on Halloween. It’s a family-friendly food that’s easy to please everyone and easy to eat while on the go.”

Of note, late Friday, Troy Smith Sr, founder of Sonic, was laid to rest after passing earlier this week. That story up next on LALATE.

Day Light Savings Time Change 2009!

Posted: October 30th, 2009 in Nation by LALATE

Day Light Savings Time Change 2009

Day Light Savings 2009 Time Change caused one week of confusion. Daylight Savings 2009 Time Change needs a change of its own as U.S. residents were left confused since Friday last week, exclaiming – what time is it!

The good news is all this confusion is about to end. Daylight Savings Time concludes November 1, 2009! In fact many LALATE readers report computers turned on LAST Sunday set clocks back.

The current change to Daylight Savings was implemented during the Bush Administration. Two years ago, Daylight Savings Time 2009 Fall Back was switched from the last Sunday of October to the first Sunday of November. For 2009, that falls November 1, 2009.

The next time you change your clocks is March 14 2010 – the second Sunday in March. And if you are wondering, while many call it Day Light Savings Time, what is the correct name?

a. Day Light Savings Time
b. Daylight Savings Time
c. Daylight Saving Time.

The correct answer is “c”.

If you don’t like the concept of Time Changes, then you have George Vernon Hudson to blame.

Hudson in 1895 came up with the concept of Daylight Savings Time. Since then, it’s repeatedly been controversial. Churchill said once in support of Daylight Savings Time that it affords “the opportunities for the pursuit of health and happiness among the millions of people who live in this country”.

Historians believe the concept may date back to the Romans who used different clock scales in ancient times at different parts of the years.

Daylight Savings Time 2009 Fall Back!

Daylight Savings Time 2009 Fall Back

When exactly is Daylight Savings Time 2009 Fall Back? Get your clocks ready for Daylight Savings Time 2009 Fall Back which last week caused massive confusion.

The reason? This year it’s falling not on last Sunday of October. Instead Daylight Savings now falls on the first Sunday of November. This year the date is November 1, 2009. So before you dress up for Halloween, turn all your clocks back; come sunrise, Daylight savings will be over.

Two years ago, Daylight Savings Time 2009 Fall Back was switched from the last Sunday of October to the first Sunday of November. The net awoke last week to mass confusion with thousands of LALATE readers thinking they forgot to set their clocks back.

The next time you change your clocks is March 14 2010 – the second Sunday in March. And if you are wondering, while slang refers to it as “Savings Time”, it’s technically “Saving” Time.

So before you put your Kate Gosselin wig on, or grab hold of your fake Balloon boy costume, remember October 31 to set your clocks back before you go to bed.
