While we may never know what caused Steve Phillips to cheat on his wife while at the Mets, according to his own reported admission, and then cheat on her again now at ESPN, Phillips does confirm he has entered a treatment facility.

His rep says today Steve Phillips “is voluntarily admitting himself to an in patient treatment facility to address his personal issues.”

ESPN finally had enough of Phillips whose affair headlined all major news channels for three days until the weekend, each day yielding more bizarre twists and turns. Most recently, court papers revealed that mistress Brooke Hundley sought a restraining order against Phillips.

The handwritten document by Hundley read “Steve brought me a strong drink and then cornered me with coming out of the bathroom with no one in sight trying to persuade me to come to his hotel suite to spend the night.”

“Finally I gave in and agreed to see him a few times in parking lots .. then he began to spread word that i was just the office sl –t “

ESPN today finally said enough. “Steve Philips is no longer working for ESPN. His ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged and it became evident it was time to part ways.”

Back in August this year, Phillips’ wife Marni said she was very concerned for the safety of her and her children.

“On Sunday August 16 my husband called me from Atlanta and told me to brace myself because she was threatening to call me and disclose intimate details of their affair. .. The tone of the text message [she sent] was “I care about Steve, I make him happy and we both can’t have him”. “

“At this point I began to feel a heightened sense of vulnerability as this woman was aware of my husband’s rigorous travel schedule. I was unable to sleep. I paced the perimeter of my house, constantly checking the safety of my sons.“

Marni Phillips ends her statement about Brooke Hundley as follows:

“Needless to say, as a mother with four young sons, I am terrified. I fear greatly for the safety and well being of my sons and for myself. … I am currently pursuing drastic and costly security precautions such as hiring an off duty Wilton Police officer to stand guard. “
