Mount Wilson Observatory Cam Update!

Posted on August 31st, 2009 in Fires by lalate

Mount Wilson Observatory Cam Update

The Mount Wilson Observatory cam is up and down. The Mount Wilson Observatory cam aka the UCLA Towercam is down but was up earlier.

As reported moments ago on LALATE, the Station Fire is now on two sides of Mt Wilson. Mt Wilson was evacuated by personnel Saturday and staffed by firefighters, but Monday morning all firefighters were pulled out too.

Ray Dombroski for the US Forest Service told press moments ago:

“There is a good chance the fire will hit Mt. Wilson today. The fire is currently on two sides of Mt. Wilson, about one-half mile to the north and about one mile southwest.”

UCLA is not confirming whether images are no longer being transmitted because of traffic or the Station Fire. The most recent blog post was at 7:50 AM today:

Monday, 31 Aug 09, 7:50 am PDT - At 6:25 this morning, fire crews were instructed to withdraw from Mount Wilson. Larry Webster and Dave Jurasevich left the mountain with them. I have just spoken with Larry and Dave when they reached the bottom of the Angeles Crest Hwy in La Canada, and they report minimal fire activity in the immediate vicinity of Mount Wilson. It is not clear why the withdrawal decision was made nor whether or not the fire crews will return. Those fire fighters joined other crews deployed at the Red Box turnoff to Mount Wilson, five miles from the Observatory. So, they are still within close proximity for redeployment. Thus, the good news is that the fire in the Observatory’s vicinity seems to have diminished. The bad news is that there are no fire fighters presently on the scene.

Luca Bertello told UCLA Today on Monday that the fire is still unpredictable.

“Right now, the fire is still very unpredictable. The risk is high, but so far, everything is all right.”

The article published on Monday said the cam had been transmitting images earlier today.
