Philadelphia Inquirer on Michael Vick!

Posted: August 14th, 2009 in Football, Michael Vick, Sports by LALATE

Philadelphia Inquirer on Michael Vick

Philadelphia Inquirer Sports Columnist Phil Sheridan writes today Michael Vick is “not worth the trouble for Eagles”. Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sheridan blasts Vick as The Philadelphia Daily News “greets” Vick with a Friday cover that reads “Hide Your Dogs”.

Sheridan says Vick was a “polarizing figure”. But today, Sheridan feels Vick isn’t worth the gamble.

“The downside here just isn’t worth the potential upside. It just isn’t.”

Andy Reid thinks PETA has his support.

“This is America. We do make mistakes, and in this situation he has a chance to prove he is doing the right things and I think the fans will be excited for him as long as he continues to do them. He’s been proactive, speaking all over the country and working with the Humane Society.”

Cue PETA statement from Dan Shannon to AP:

“PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Eagles decided to sign a guy who hung dogs from trees.

“He electrocuted them with jumper cables and held them under water. You have to wonder what sort of message this sends to young fans who care about animals and don’t want them to be harmed.”

Sheridan further writes:

“Sure, Vick is remorseful now. … He has every reason to be remorseful. No doubt he’s sincere. And perhaps someone, somewhere should have given him an opportunity to play again. Just not the Eagles. Just not here.”

Philadelphia Inquirer – please look up the shennigans – and some say theft history of the Humane Society of the United States. Andy Reid may have overlooked the questionable validity of the organization he is using as cover to validate his win at any cost even if includes murdering fido.

Note to Andy Reid – using PETA as a character witness for Vick’s repentence? This is the same organization that compared on its web site chicken fryers raised as food and their treatment to that of the Holocaust. Fire Reid. Boycott all of the Eagles merchandise until Vick is cut.

I am officially no longer a Philadelphia Eagles fan. Owner Jeff Lurie, and president/COO Joe Banner , by condoning the sadistic torturing of innocent animals you have taken Philadelphia sports to it’s lowest low. Congratulations. We’ve always known you two were complete assholes, now you’ve nationally insulted and embarrassed our great city. May yours, and Mr. Vick’s unconscionable souls rot in a hell of dog shit.

The NFL – dead to me. The City of Philadelphia – dead to me. I used to love to visit Philadelphia with my family, but you will never get another of my tourist dollars again. Michael Vick is the Charles Manson of the dog world. I wouldn’t want to watch Charles Manson playing NFL football either!

I think this is GREAT!!! Finally a team has the balls to sign Vick. I mean what is with all you haters. If you want to discredit his skills I understand but what more do you guys want from this guy??? He lost his job and millions of dollars. Oh ya thats right he spent 2 whole years in prison!! Dante Stallworth drove drunk and killed a man and only spent 24 days in jail!!! Mike Vick has paid his debt and some!! This is America not Iraq. Of course he deserves a second chance iuf any team is willing to do so. Bravo Eagles. BRAVO.

The Eagles sign a man who hanged dogs from trees, electrocuted them with jumper cables, held them underwater until they drowned in his swimming pool, and even threw his own family dogs into the fighting pit to be torn to shreds while he laughed. Great job. Thanks for giving our young people such a FANTASTIC role model. I hope every game is picketted, I hope people scream DOG MURDERED every time he walks on the field. ANd I hope to GOD he’s never allowed near another animal again.

Although a Giants fan, I’ve always respected the Eagles and their fans. As far as respecting the Eagles, well that is gone now. And to any fans that just think about winning a damn football game and not think about Michael Dick killing innocent helpless animals because he is a sick disgusting person, then my respect for you is gone too.

Vick keep your head up, don’t worry about the haters.

It’s the same fools how tortured and killed innocent PEOPLE in the past, and still to this day that want to judge this man. The man has done his time, leave him alone. I also bet this same people don’t have a problem with George Bush or his croons, didn’t he just commit a crime that’s worst than Vick’s, hell he has not only killed innocent people but killed an economy. That’s one example out of many.

Would you Vick fans think the same way if he molested children and did his time? This idea that he “paid” for his crime is BS. 20 months in prison does not fix a sociopath. People who harm other people and/or animals for pleasure are sociopaths. I hope you like your teammate Phillie.

As a 25 year transplant from the Northeast to the South, I commend the Phila Eagles organization for “stepping Out of the Box” and openly recognize that Michael Vick has paid his price and should be given a chance to prove that he has turned the corner and it is only just that a City like Phila and a organization like the Eagles are open minded enough to extend the “TRUTH” of the “City of Brotherly Love”. I know that in the South they still haven’t forgot the Civil War! God Bless Phila for believing in their fellow man with open arms. He won’t let you down!

  13. Mike said,

Thank you Eagles! Vick will probably never take a snap if McNabb stays healthy, but that is not the point. Michael Vick has clearly done some horrible things, but EVERYONE deserves a chance to atone for their wrongs. Why would he be any different?

  14. Dox Mom said,

    on August 14th, 2009 at 11:08 am

When someone can harm something that is screaming, writhing and panting in pain and they do it for pleasure – they are mentally ill. Again, people think cause it’s just dogs that he’s paid for his crime. If it were children the thought process would be different. He is a SOCIOPATH. 20 months doesnt fix it.

When a violent offender’s occupation prior to incarceration is a violent sport, said offender should not be allowed to participate in the sport. Just like a pedophile teacher isn’t allowed to teach/be near children again. Bottom… line, the Eagles are encouraging this violent offender to bulk up, produce more testosterone and become violent for the next 3 months. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

If an only if he donates his salary to the betterment of animals and donates his time as well, will I reconsider my position on Vick. He is, as of today, pond scum.

I fail to see how not wanting to watch Michael Vick makes me a hater? What I am saying is that the NFL and the Eagles probably did not do a very good job of looking at the overall ramifications of what having Vick play. Phillie is already struggling with an identity crisis of not being a wholesome family place. With this Vick move, the morality and safety of the city will be questioned even further. The majority of people in Phillie are good people and likely want no part of this, especially as it will hurt them financially. For me, I can just as easily go to Baltimore, Boston, or New York and have a great time with my tourist dollars as I won’t be going to Phillie if Vick plays.

His second chance was being freed from incarceration. The cherry on his sundae of life is this contract with the Eagles.

I’m not judging him, I’m stating for a fact that violent criminals shouldn’t be allowed to participate/profit from violent sports the same way a pedophile teacher shouldn’t be allowed near children.

As a devout Eagles fan, I say shame on all so called fans who choose to turn their back on our family. Win or lose I am an Eagles fan and thoroughly support the organization. I have questioned player personnel issues (see D.Staley, see B.Dawkins), but my loyalty has never wavered. There is redemption in all of us; we all make mistakes throughout the week and watch football on Sundays. Anybody that doesn’t want their tickets send them to me, I’m sure that I can find a few real fans that would love to spend Sunday afternoons at the Linc. My pop used to say “Take the 2″x4″ out of your eye before telling someone about the toothpick in theirs.” Everybody is up in arms about this dog issue; it disgusted me when I heard about the charges against Vick and his cronies but I still where leather belts and shoes and jackets. I’m sure most of you do as well. My point, none of us is perfect, none of us is perfect, and furthermore none of us is perfect. Welcome home Michael Vick.

As a Redskin fan I always respected the Eagles for their tough brand of football. No more! Burning live animals for enjoyment is not a “MISTAKE”! It’s a heinos crime that only a very sick sub-human monster would do!

Lurie is a pig as is Andy [ I would sleep with the devil to win a super bowl ] Reid. This is going to destroy the Eagles. If they thougt TO was a distraction, just wait! It couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of fans?

Why didn’t the league at least have Vick go through a series of mental exams to find out if he has any rational thought process? To have remorse, one must feel compassion. Vick is a sociopath incapable of discerning evil from human behavior. He belongs in a cell with Charles Manson not on the feild as a role model for children!

God may forgive him but I never will! I have never wanted to see a player get hurt but I hope the Skins end his carrer!

My compliments to the good Eagle fans who are devistated by this unconscienable act. I hope the rest of the apologists come back as a dog owned by Michael Vick in their next life.

This will be a big turn off for tourist.

And if God’s forgiveness is for “all of us” then let’s forgive Charles Manson, Osama Bin Laden, jeffrey Dahmer… hey. let’s add John Wayne Gacy who raped and mutilated young boys – cause you know he served his time too. And really, does God ask that a sinner “serve his tiem”. I dont’ think so. So let’s open the prison doors and forgive our fellow men for murder, rape, burgulary, molestation, terrorism.. what else can you add to this list Football girl?? I applaud the Eagles organization for their compassion, particularly Donavan; he is a true human being and THE man. Where is everyone’s sense of forgiveness? I am a total animal lover and have several dogs, but Michael has paid for his mistake many times over. If the likes of Tony Dungy can see the good in Michael, then so can I. Good luck Michael. If Michael Vick was a plumber or a bus driver, would you deny him the right to make a living in his chosen profession? Or is it that he is a highly paid and visible professional athlete that is part of the reason for so much vitriol? For some folks, professional athletes seem to have fewer rights– they shouldn’t be paid so much, right? What Vick did makes my skin crawl. I have cats and a dog and I cannot imagine anyone torturing them. But, we have a little thing in this country called the Constitution, and he has a right to make a living, whether it be football or as a cook. We also have the right not to buy tickets, support team sponsors, or watch or listen to the games. Professional football– like just about every profession– has many sick and violent people. If you are going to pick and choose who to eliminate in your sphere of influence, don’t forget the computer techs, cashiers, teachers, politicians and carpenters.

  37. Dog said,

A convicted felon in the real world can’t get a job as a plumber or at McDonalds for that matter – it’s against company policy. But if he wants a job in the NFL – no problem!!

And his crime is less severe because it was an animal?!?! Well I’m sure Jeffrey Dahmers victims wished animal cruelty charges were taken a little more seriously back in the day…

When charles Manson gets out let’s have him teach kindergarten. And you vick fans get to send your kids. Because God has forgiven him too.

I am a 30 year fan of the Eagles. That ended yesterday with the signing of Michael Vick. My team stickers have been removed from my car and my 4 jerseys, 3 hats, vintage belt buckle, and other gear are going to take a trip through the wood chipper (if I can find one). I will not support the Eagle’s organization. Even if Vick were to be released tomorrow, the damage has been done.

A sociopath is a sociopath. For those of you that are griping that it was “only dogs”, enjoy your games and upgrade your seats. There should be plenty available.

For those of you that don’t get the dog thing -
–Vick was gambling. NFL Players are forbidden to gamble. They can get suspended for life. (ask Pete Rose about this)
–Vick knowingly gave herpes to a woman in 2005
–Vick tested positive for marijuana while on bail awaiting trial
–The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted Reeves as having told Vick: “You are an Atlanta Falcon…Whatever you do is going to be a reflection on all of us, not just you.”
Philadelphia, and I mean the good people of Philadelphia, this is going to be your reflection.

For a long time I was disgusted by the “men” that played football. In my high school they could do no wrong because it was a championship team. Every abuse was ignored, even the more frighteningly serious ones.

Then I moved to Philly and slowly fell in love with the Eagles. I had begun to think I had been too judgmental. That in spite of what I had seen, there could be men that were good, or at least not bad, in professional sports.

I now know I’m wrong. Myself and about 6 or 7 friends are burning our gear tonight. Football, and specifically the Eagles, are dead to me.

  41. Ringo said,

I’m not an Eagles fan, but I do appluad the organization for giving Vick a second chance.

If you grow up in a home filled with domestic violence, you are more likely to become an actor or victim of domestic violence. If you grow up in a segregated region/family, your chances of being a racist are increased. My point is that many of us are products of what we see. We don’t know any better until someone teaches us. Vick had to learn the hard way.

I’m not a huge Vick fan, but he is a product of his environment. I live in the DC area and dogfighting happens everywhere. It’s not right, but it does happen and Vick can be an instrument of change. America has gang members go to prison for some of the most heinous crimes you can imagine and for whatever reason, some are reformed. The next thing you know, they’re out preaching to the youth about the dangers of gang alliances. Because of his fame or infamy, Vick has a chance to really make a difference in helping others see the harm and evil in dogfigting. This isnt about football, it’s about forgiveness and the oppurtunity for a young man to redeem himself and make up the harm he’s caused. I don’t think he’s a sociopath, I think he’s a spoiled athlete that believed he was untouchable. He’s learned a lesson so lets see where he goes from here.

It’s not up to us to forgive Vick, it’s up to GOD to forgive him and GOD has already done that for Michael Vick and the rest of us.

And for those of you that say you aren’t Hater’s, you words make syou sound as though you HATE the fact that he’s been given a second chance. That makes you a HATER.

Look at yourself before looking at others.

I have been an Eagles fan for over 4 decades, which hasn’t always been easy, but hiring Vick is the final straw. HE MADE A MISTAKE!!! I don’t have to reiterate what he did but torture and murder does not fit in the category of a mistake. I will never again watch the Eagles, root for them or pray for their success. Even if they reach that ultimate goal, how will Reid and Lurie hold their heads up high? I guess they can just hide them behind their flimsy “second chance” remarks. I’d trade a Super Bowl win any day if I could still say “I’m proud of my team”.

Wow! These are very interesting comments. Just some observations:
    1. I see mention of his salary, which indicates that jealousness may be at the root of some of these comments.
    2. Lets get some history on this dog fighting stuff: Dogs have been the unwitting victims of exploitation for blood sports since ancient Roman times when they fought against other animals in the Coliseum. The practice of pitting dogs against other animals, such as bulls and bears, continued through medieval times in England until it was outlawed in 1835 by the Parliament in the Humane Act of 1835. Around that time, the Staffordshire Bull terrier was developed and modern dog-fighting was born. The dog was brought to America in 1817 and dog fighting became part of American culture.
    3. Jesus Christ was crucified, tortured, beaten and yet upon our cross, He asked God to forgive them for they know not what they do. This should answer the forgiveness problem.
    4. Question: For how many of you, have Michael Vick become your new O.J. Simpson? One can tell a tree by it’s fruit. If hatred and un-forgiveness is spewing out of your comments, then so is your heart. Oh! just remember, God looks upon the hearts of men.

So is is better to boycott because of one man, and hurt many men, than to forgive one man, so that many men can continue to earn a living off of entertaining via the sports industry. That is foolish and will run your cities economy down into the ground. Do, so and you will see the Eagles in another city that will appreciate having the economic opportunity!

Michael Vick did not ask for the talents that God gave him, nor the environment that he grew up into. It is evident that those institutions and organizations did not care anything about teaching this young man about life changes, but only cared about the money they could make off of him. It appears that the Brotherly Love has already left your city. You appear to love kicking a brother, when he is already down. It amazes me how so many Americans were for war and killing yet so many are voicing so much hatred for health or forgiveness. What have we become?

As a native Pennsylvanian and one who works in animal rescue, I’m disappointed. One, I don’t believe Vick is sorry for what he did, only that he got caught. But it’s a free country and the Eagles are free to sign any pr nightmare they want. I do know good can come out of bad and though I don’t believe he’s sincere, he CAN bring light to a terrible crime that for too long has been OUT of the public eye. In that sense he can do some good. We’ll see what he donates of his millions to area shelters. The Eagles should put THAT in his contract–that they will send a percentage of his salary to PA animal shelters.

One more thing: we forgive mistakes when they are one-time things. In other words: Mistakes. What Vick did was not a mistake. He KNEW it was illegal on so many levels. He has eyes and ears and KNEW it was cruel and painful and sick. That’s a pathalogical sickness, not a mistake. Sadly, our society cares more about money and a game than living creatures. He has no compassion or feeling for living things. That’s sick.

so, let me see if i understand this–fans who pay lots of money to watch a sport where men beat and bash each other on the playing field are appalled at having a ruthless competitor on their team? how many former nfl players are crippled and physically broken as a result of this game? and you people are upset because some dogs were tortured and died? where is the sense in all of this? he did it–he got caught–he went to prison–move on people!

    To Eagles owners and coaches,

How pathetic that you opted to trade your team, your town, and your tradition as a respected football organization for an athlete who took all of his fame, fortune and god-given talent and used it to create death camps for dogs. Andy Reid, you couldn’t be a moral example for your own family, so I guess we shouldn’t be suprised now that you’ve proven you can’t be a moral example for society and football. Good luck, you’re gonna need it.

Sandy: PR stands for Power Rules. They don’t care about public relations. True money is the root of all kinds of evil and I find it quite interesting that donating Money is part of the good that can come out of this.

I don’t and never did see Vick’s actions as a mistake. He was committing a crime and more than likely, had been committing that crimminal act for a very long time. He got caught and by the laws of this country, was charged, found guilty and convicted by a jury of his peers. He served the time handed down by the crimminal justice system of this country. End of story. He is now a citizen with a crimminal past, but a citizen. Now comes certian members of our society that want to place him on trial again by public opinion and that is all that it is opinion. Ok, even if you only forgive mistakes, what about giving someone a chance to prove themselves? Can you hold your opinion at least until he is given a chance? Not everyone that is incarserated return to their crimminal ways.

What Mike did was wrong and I do not deny that. But we are talking about dogs who are animals and not people. If you are a person who is a christian and cant forgive a man for this act than shame on you and maybe you should pick up a bible and study harder. You need someone to pray for you for not being able to forgive. People hunt, slaughter, and use dead animals as trophies everyday but its OK. Become a vegetarian and help out other animals from being slaugtered then. Think about if it were YOUR son that had done this and if he should be forgiven. I know that some may reply ” I dont care” or “this isnt the same.” I hope the guy dose well because I belive that he deserves a second chance and I have forgiven him for his crime. I have a soul that forgives and I do not feel he is a threat to society. Who ever made the comment comparing him to Charles Manson is ignorant. You cannot compare the loss of a dog to a loss of a human life…..It is NOT the same no matter how much you want it to be.

I think some of the people here must be perfect, never having done something they are ashamed of. The man lost all respect, was disgraced personally and professionally, spent time in prison, and lost millions and millions of dollars. Short of having him anally crucified, what more can we expect him to do? The man has a right to try to get his life back together…

Michael Vick is an ass clown and Philly is clearly either desperate or really stupid to sign such a moral liability like Vick. You are all missing the point-character is character and ethics are ethics-no matter how fast you can throw a pigskin brown ball-you carry those traits with you. When you kill, torture, and destroy innocent animals for your own sadistic pleasure and financial gain, there is something seriously, seriously wrong there. Michael Vick does not belong in the NFL, or in our society for that matter-he belongs in a mental hospital. Good luck Philly-you are going to need it.

Forget redemption–turnabout is fair play…Michael, you should have known better and you shouldn’t have been the arrogant SOB thug you were when the story started to break. The loss of MILLIONS of dollars is enough motivation for even the most morally bankrupt to say the right things.

What the heck are you people thinking. Micheal Vick is a thug, dog killer and has trained kids in Atlanta to be the same. I know, I lived there. He was a thug from the first day he set foot in Atlanta. This is a disappointment for all and says so much about Philadelphia… how in the world can you support this. Your football fans are famous for letting your feelings be known. Kick the Vick out of town. He needs to have the same done to him as he did to the dogs. You can’t imagine the sounds that dying dogs make. I will remember him forever only by that sound and by his Meaness andcruelty.

As a long time resident of Philadelphia and a lifetime Eagles Fan, I am appalled that the Eagles signed Michael Vick. I am not sure why everyone condones this as a “second chance”. He has paid his debt and earned the right to work. He has not earned the right to play in the NFL and to be a ROLE MODEL to millions of children. What lesson does this send? A police officer, lawyer, doctor, CPA, etc. would not be allowed to continue in the same capacity in their profession. Why is he expected to get a second chance. Shame on you Eagles.

Everyone says what if, let us deal with the facts. The fact is he funded dog fighting. This country was built on murder and robbery, check you history. So if the roots are not good then the limbs are just a product of that. Further more if your purchase a car and pay for it, then later the car dealership says, hey I think I want a little more money. He paid his debt and now people want more. Every person should given a chance to redeem themselves. And quit looking to athletes to be the role models. Here is a what if? What if he was you brother, friend, husband, etc……… People are so quick to judge another. We don’t know how to be humane ourselves.

Congrats to Michael Vick and Eagles! Great pick up. Mike did his time (more than he should have had to do) and now wanting to make a come back. I guess all the folks that are critical of the move have never made a mistake. I only wish they were as vocal against spousal abuse, gun voilence, and drug abuse, which are 1,000 times worse than the issue of dog fighting. Dog fighting is bad but it doesn’t reach the high crimes noted above. Please PETA – Be part of the solution. If not just sit down and shut up for once.

Millions of children all over the country are not going to start dog fighting rings…just like they don’t go out and shoot people because of Grand Theft Auto. He’s not a role model, he’s a backup quarterback that will likely have little significant contribution this year. Oh yeah, and for the smug moral superiors here who “are no longer eagles fans,” let’s wait 2 fucking months until you find another overblown issue to be self-righteous about.

God forbid that Mike Vick actually be forced to get a real job and prove himself to be a decent human being before being allowed to waltz right back into the NFL. Laughing like hell that the Eagles didn’t even require him to work out for them. He’s garbage as a person and has yet to do one thing voluntarily to show that he’s changed one but. Give him a few months to get comfortable and he’ll drop the tapdancing act and he’ll show his true colors again.

So in other words you guys are saying he should have a lifetime bad. Please get over your selves. Part of this is racism and part of it is pure idiocity. The man did almost 2 years in jail. What happened in the early 1900s to almost 1970 with whites lynching blacks not a DAMN thing. You guys are using this as a public lynching get over it. Let the man play a simple game called football and get on with his life.

Of course Michael Vick deserves a second chance. I bet there are plenty of good jobs open at UPS or Fedex… maybe a few good cab driver spots. It’s a big city, and a free country.

And people are free to despise a guy who recreationally and joyfully inflicted suffering on helpless animals. “Haters” has nothing to do with it: the man’s debased.

He may deserve a second chance as a citizen out of prison, but nobody DESERVES a multimillion dollar pinacle position in the entertainment industry. That is, after all, what the NFL is.

The man made a living garnering the approval of people. The people disapprove. Simple transaction.

A human being who executes dogs by hanging, drowing and electrocution sickens me. A human being who rubs shards of glass on dogs before a fight to make them more aggressive sickens me. A human being who is part of any dog fighting ring is not making “a mistake”, they are a sociopath. Yes, there are crimes committed by sociopaths, such as child abuse, spouse abuse, rape and murder, but that doesn’t make what Vick any less sociopathic. Has he gotten any help for his sickness? Did he give names of others who are members of the dark world of dog fighting? I know someone who’s dog was stolen and later found out that his dog was used as practice for a dog fight and was ripped to shreads. All of us who feel that our pets are part of our family, stand up, and shout loudly. Dog fighting is a very dark and disturbing world. Anyone who thinks differently, do some research.

Yes, what Vick did to dogs was really bad. But, he has served his sentence and is active in promoting better treatment of animals. What more do you want from him? Obviously some of you are bitter because he is employed now, and you aren’t. I have a suggestion for you: Instead of being on the computer, bitching about a man who now has a job, why don’t you use this time constructively to find your own. Quit hating on Vick. I wish him well.

The point I wish to make regarding Vick is that we, as fans,do not want to furnish him with millions of dollars out of our pockets and have him forced into our lives when we hate what he was capable of. He ENJOYED TORTURE and cruelty and that is the sign of a dark and horrible soul. He should not be rewarded by welcoming him back into the world he disrespected and squandered. If he were truly sorry, he would have been willing to make it right WITHOUT millions of dollars coming his way. This, again , shows there is NO CONSEQUENCE TO SPITTING ON YOUR MULTI MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT TO PLAY IN THE NFL. When does it stop with these guys? What is the deterrent to these horrible acts? I, as a true fan, want to be able to enjoy my football without paying the salary of horrible, sick, mean hearted people. WE DON’T NEED VICK. Let these positions go to the many other talented players who we might actually ENJOY cheering for. NO FELONS IN THE NFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
