email has essentially made the post office somewhat obsolete except for the need for parcels and hard copies of documents. I don't see any solution except to close offices and decrease service. I would even prefer to have a monday , wednesday , friday service as opposed to closing offices in small communities however.

Unfortunately the post office suffers from an unbelievably strong bureaucracy and employees union. I worked in a USPO data center for the better part of the year and the interoffice fighting and outright laziness of the rank-and-file employees was amazing. While strolling around on my floor you could see many of the employees openly sleeping in their cubicles.

The PO has to hire contractors to do the work of the regular employees who can not or will not do their jobs. Meanwhile the regular PO employees do everything in their power to get the contractors fired. It's amazing that any work gets done in a PO office at all.

Did you know that the PO no longer handles it's own airmail? It contracts out airmail because it can no longer effectively deliver it. In time the rest of the PO will be phased out for much the same reason. I wish it were otherwise but the bureaucracy and the PO workers have effectively driving a spike into the heart of their business that has already killed it. They just haven't seen the writing on the wall yet.

Tish,

I am sure that you send emails, right? The Post Office is not fully supported by the Government, they depend on people sending mail, companies sending ads and catalogs and this has greatly decreased in the past few years. The post office needs to greatly cut back on the number of offices! If you think they should not, then i suggest you stop sending emails and send anything you need to by sending an actual letter...until you do this, stop talking!

With the state of the economy, and all the returning vets, the postal service should be rebuilding not down sizing. Post offices should be upgraded and remodeled to create jobs. Instead of cutting back days and hours, hours should be increase. Computers should be in every post office for costumer use to look up zip codes, addresses, or other such information. The post office should be made and maintained as an important part of every community. It is part of the AMERICAN WAY! (P.S. this web site is not user friendly and maybe hiring some young vets or young college grads with computer knowledge would help and improve usage of the postal service)
