GIA is the 1998 made for TV film airing tonight at 7 and 9:30 on Oxygen. The film earned Golden Globes for Jolie and co-star Faye Dunaway. Jolie plays Gia who died from AIDS at age 26.
While Janice Dickinson and Dorian Leigh have often claimed to be the world’s first supermodels, many believe it was Gia, a powerhouse in fashion starting in the late 1970s. Years later people saw a similarity between Gia Carangiand then upstart Cindy Crawford.
In later years, an addiction to heroin led to a downturn in Gia Carangi’s career. While her face was famous, her passing went widely unreported, many holding it to be the first major female celebrity to die of AIDS.
