Apparently, thereafter, something other than economics developed. Now press and residents are fuming because the governor didn’t just have an affair back at home, but went disappearing, his wife and staff giving wrong or not forthcoming information about him. His staff referred to Sanford’s antics as “not uncommon” using the interesting choice of words:
“[I]t’s not uncommon for him to go out of pocket for a few days at a time to clear his head.”
>Then his staff told press he was off hiking in the U.S. No, that too was false. He was off in Buenos Aires with his mistress, on Fathers Day. His wife says he wanted to time to “get away from the kids”. More like time to get with the mistress, who Sanford says his wife knew about five months ago. Sanford moments ago said:
“I’ve let down a lot of people, that’s the bottom line”.
Who is the mistress? She is believed to be a resident of Argentina. Where did Mark and the Mistress stay? Sanford refused to answer a question if he stayed in a Buenos Aires hotel, or not. The bigger question is if he will stay in the Governor’s Office. Sanford said he won’t resign as Governor but wil resign as head of the Republican Governors Association. Sanford has four kids.

he should resign. when the whole clinton scandal was underway, governor sanford said that he should resign for lying. i think that he should take his own advice and get his lying self out of the governor’s mansion.

I agree. What a shameful thing this man did. What is wrong with our society, we have no respect for families and peoples lives anymore. I can not understand. I am praying that their marriage is healed, lord forbid is that ruthless mistress gets her way!

Who cares about his family and cheating on them? He left the state without leadership for a week. Who would be authorized the handle emergencies?? Incredibly irresponsible and exactly why he should be released of his Governor duties.

Well, Clinton did NOT resign, and instead went thru impeachment hearings and stuck around.
I think the state had it handled, no matter how loud some are yelling about “who would take over?”- if you can’t figure out that the Lt. Governor was next in line and obviously the person to call, maybe common sense should be revisited in schools.
I don’t agree with what he did and I don’t understand how all these “family values” politicians on the right can preach preach preach but not follow their own line of this BS. It makes me angry.
At least his wife is leaving him. I wish our Governor would come up missing like that. (MI)

he is nothing but a phony and hypocrite. He said Clinton needed to resign b/c he violated the public trust, so then he should apply this same measure of judgement to himself that he used to judge Bill Clinton. He needs to get out and start flipping burgers at MCDonalds — I bet the Argentinian mistress would lose her attraction for him if he didnt make it to supervisor of burger flipping == he needs to apologize to the Clintons and admit he likes sex too — he has a weakness obviously for hoy Latinas — hmm..I wonder what his policy be on immigration from Latin America

It is unclear to me what the expectations are for governors in terms of the number of days they are permitted to be out of their state on personal leave. If the governor did not follow proper protocol with his staff he should consider resigning. The affair is a separate issue and a personal matter for this family. Affairs do not happen overnight and no one can understand the dynamics at play except for Governor Sanford, Mrs. Sanford and Maria. Often times intention and impact are not the same thing and clearly the impact here is negative in many ways. What cannot be understood by those of us on the outside is the personal relationship the Governor and his wife have. Marriage is an institution and there are moral guidelines for marriages. There are also legal, financial and political reasons for remaining in marriages that are simply window dressing. While the nature of the relationship Mark and Jenny share is unknown to us, it is known that some marriages appear to be functional but the husband and wife live life in a bit of a robotic way and feel a sense of obligation to maintain the perception of a strong marriage.
What I am trying to say, is it is impossible to know what really has happened here from an emotional perspective. That is a private matter. The Governor’s professional obligations are important and he needs to make sure his state is well cared for in his absence. Leaving unannounced is unprofessional if that is indeed what happened. As for his marriage, I hope Mark and Jenny find personal space to do what is best for them at this time as individuals, as husband and wife and as parents of their children. God’s love is always there for them and sometimes we are sent into storms rather than calm waters. Given the fact that we only have this one human life, I hope the Governor and his wife can find the courage to engage in mutual dialogue about where they are, where they have been and where they want to go. The more they are able to be truly honest with each other, the better their relationship will be. Moreover, being honest, admitting challenges, and working through this time with faith and hope for the future will be an enduring legacy for their children. We all encounter personal challenges. We also create our own places of stuckness and limitation. I hope the Sanfords can take a step back and realize that they can and will work through this time. The Governorship, while an important job, is just a job. In 100 years from now no one will remember what type of Governor Mark Sanford was. His grandchildren will remember him though and as his wife said, his children are his legacy. My hope is he will be candid with his family and with himself and do the hard work that is required to get through this time. How he handles this time will impact his children and forever imprint their hearts. I don’t know what the right answer is for Mark, but I hope he thinks about this and chooses that which is best for his family at this time.

Funny, if he had cheated on his taxes instead of his wife we would be in Obama’s Cabinet…
