Sotomayor Pinata Cartoon Oklahoman!
Justice Sonia Sotomayor in a new Chip Bok “The Oklahoman” cartoon is hung by her neck like a piñata. Is the cartooon racist?
Critics say yes. One thing for sure - the cartoon is wrong. Sotomayor is Puerto Rican. The pinata comes from Mexican tradition. New York publisher Rossana Rosado tells local Oklahoma press:
“I do know that it’s offensive, and I think that it reflects a lot of the ignorance that many Americans have about Latinos, that we’re all Mexican or all this or all that”.
The cartoon’s creator reportedly his job is to “joke” about stereotypes.
“Since she emphasized her Latinaness and played it up as a virtue, I thought, ‘Well, how about a fiesta and a piñata?’. This is a Mexican thing, but again, we’re dealing with stereotypes. That’s all kind of the joke, I thought.”
In the cartoon, Sotomayor (edited out above) is represented as a pinata, hung by her neck in her Justice robe, as Barack Obama gives out bats to Republicans depicted as elephants in suits.

It’s Oklahoma, what do you expect? We’re still 30 years behind the rest of the U.S. Overalls, straw hats, fishing reels, Uncle Tom’s Cabin are still in. Diversity is unheard of. Why do you think we were the only COMPLETELY RED state in the entire USA?

Geeze, as an AMERICAN of mexican descent, I don’t find find the cartoon of Sotomayor offensive, Iol.actually I think it’s funny, lighten up! and quit your, nitpicking is she or isn’t she mexican? just the fact that she’s considered “latina” she’s fair game, The tipical,whiny emo liberals,and I’m not talking about all liberal or democrats because I’m sure that there are the rational, sane, intelligent ones. will get their feathers ruffled by what I say.
I also feel that Sotomayor will be biased as”she can do better” than a white man! if that isn’t arrogance and stupiditness! reeks of racism which will leads to corruption of our laws
I say that Mr.Newcombe or Mr. Thompson not apologize for exercising their right to freedom of speech! God help us, I hope it’s not too late.
