Savana Redding PHOTOS

PHOTOS! Here are pictures of Savana Redding, now 19, whose strip search suit against a school district heads to the U.S. Supreme Court this week.

Savana Redding in 2003 was a 13 year old student brought into an Arizona principal’s office and strip searched.

UPDATE 6/25/09: THE SUPREME COURT JUST FOUND FOR REDDING

The reason for the search allegedly was to find ibuprofen pills based upon an unsubstantiated allegation of another student. A search of her backpack led to a complete body search by a school nurse and secretary. No pills were ever found. Redding couldn’t return to school after the ordeal.

Her ACLU attorney tells CBS:

“Child health experts are backing Savana in this case. They agree that a strip search of a child inflicts trauma similar in kind and degree to sexual abuse.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals had found the school did violate her constitutional rights and that school heads were not immune from liability:

“We conclude that the school officials violated Savana’s Fourth Amendment right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure. The strip search of Savana was neither “justified at its inception, … nor, as a grossly intrusive search of a middle school girl to locate pills with the potency of two over-the-counter Advil capsules, reasonably related in scope to the circumstances giving rise to its initiation.”

The school district has appealed that ruling  to the Supreme Court which will hear the case this Tuesday.
