Pistachio Salmonella Symptoms!

Posted: March 31st, 2009 in Entertainment by LALATE

Setton Farms Pistachios Recall

Here are symptoms to determine if you have been struck by salmonella in
Pistachio nuts. Recalls for Salmonella Pistachio concerns were reported Monday by LALATE. Kroger, Georgia Nut Company, and Back to Nature Foods first issued preventive recalls. Late last night LALATE broke to you that Setton Farms’ pistachios are now being looked at by the California Department of Public Health tonight after Setton issued its own recall of three lots of roasted pistachios.

Here are symptoms for salmonella explained by the Mayo clinic:

In general, salmonella symptoms begin with nausea and vomiting and progress to abdominal pains and diarrhea. Additional signs and symptoms include fever, chills and muscle pains, and can last anywhere from several days to two weeks.

There are more than 2,000 types of salmonella bacteria, although fewer than a dozen types are responsible for most illness in humans. Other symptoms may be present depending on the type of salmonella germ causing your infection. The most prevalent salmonella-related illnesses are:

* Gastroenteritis. This increasingly common salmonella-induced illness is caused by the S. enteritidis bacterium, which is most often ingested through raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs or egg products. The incubation period ranges from several hours to two days, and additional signs include blood in the stool.

* Enteric fever. Also known as typhoid fever, this illness is caused by the S. typhi bacterium and is most commonly contracted by drinking salmonella-contaminated water. The incubation period ranges from five to 21 days following infection. Additional signs and symptoms may include constipation, cough, sore throat, headache and mental confusion. Slightly raised, rose-colored spots on your upper chest also may appear. In addition, a slowing of your heartbeat (bradycardia) and enlargement of your liver and spleen (hepatosplenomegaly) may be present.

* Bacteremia. This condition results when salmonella bacteria enter and circulate throughout your bloodstream. Infants and people with compromised immune systems are at special risk of developing serious complications, including infection of tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and infection within the bloodstream (sepsis). People with salmonella-induced bacteremia may show few symptoms; however, fever can be present.

If you have intestinal salmonella and you have a healthy immune system, you may not seem ill or show signs or symptoms. However, you may continue to shed the bacteria in your feces and remain contagious for up to a year.

On Monday, LALATE reported the following FDA statement about Setton:

FDA Alerts Consumers to Recall of Certain Pistachios
FDA and California Inspectors Identify Salmonella

The FDA and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating Salmonella contamination in pistachio products sold by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella Inc, Calif. The company has stopped all distribution of processed pistachios and will issue a voluntary recall involving approximately 1 million pounds of its products. Because the pistachios were used as ingredients in a variety of foods, it is likely this recall will impact many products. In addition, the investigation at the company is ongoing and may lead to additional pistachio product recalls.

The contamination involves multiple strains of Salmonella. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Thus far, several illnesses have been reported by consumers that may be associated with the pistachios. It is not yet known whether any of the Salmonella strains found in the pistachio products are linked to an outbreak. The FDA is conducting genetic testing of the samples to pursue all links.

FDA is working closely with the pistachio industry and recommends that consumers avoid eating pistachio products until further information is available about the scope of affected products.

FDA will provide a searchable database of affected products at www.fda.gov and will continue to update the public.

FDA first learned of the problem on March 24, when it was informed by Kraft Foods that its Back To Nature Trail Mix was found to be contaminated with Salmonella. Kraft had identified the source of the contamination to be pistachios from Setton and conducted a recall.

Setton Farms Pistachios Recall

Setton Farms Pistachios recall joins Kroger, Georgia Nut Company, and Back to Nature Foods. Setton Farms’ pistachios are now being looked at by the California Department of Public Health tonight after Setton issued its own recall of three lots of roasted pistachios.

Earlier today, LALATE ran for you the Kroger recall posted by the FDA. Now reports state:

State authorities said Setton sent its roasted pistachios to Georgia Nut. Setton Farms has initiated a separate recall of three lots of roasted pistachios tied to the positive results in the trail mix, California officials said.

Setton Farms of Terra Bella, California, wouldn’t comment to CBS further. The official statement from the FDA as Setton is the following:

Dustin Milligan Leaving 90210!

Posted: March 30th, 2009 in 90210, Dustin Milligan by LALATE

Dustin Milligan Leaving 90210

LALATE’s favorite Dustin Milligan (Ethan Ward) is leaving 90210 says reports. Dustin Milligan’s 90210 run as a series lead will end at season one.

Why?

A new report claims a new creative vision has come onto 90210 that wants to make significant change the show from season 1. The exit of Milligan is creative only, says the insider:

“Everyone loves Dustin. There was just a feeling that the character had run its course.”

Yes, great characters with awesome actors “run” their course with bad scripts. LALATE since the premiere of 90210 has been critical of the substandard scripts that employed cliche storylines that could be written by a 16 year old.

No confirmation from 90210 or Milligan to the report.
