Ellen DeGeneres Prop 8!

Posted on November 6th, 2008 in Ellen DeGeneres, Ellen by lalate

Ellen DeGeneres Prop 8

STATEMENT! Ellen DeGeneres has issued a statement in protest to Prop 8’s passing. Ellen DeGeneres’ opposition to proposition 8 is explained in an anti prop 8 message listed below:

“Watching the returns on election night was an amazing experience. Barack Obama is our new president. Change is here. I, like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step towards equality. We were watching history.

“This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step towards equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away.

“I believe one day a ‘ban on gay marriage’ will sound totally ridiculous. In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us.”

Ellen was among the celebrities who issued video statements in opposition to Prop 8 in October.

How can I respect anyone’s wishes to marry, when they don’t want to respect the voters in California (in 2000 and now in 2008) and the very fibers of democracy? Obama said, “I believe marriage is between a man and a woman,”
California already has Gay right. ” California Family Code, section 297.5″
YES on 8 has passed….Democracy has worked, the people voice was heard, Now the Gays are attacking the CHURCH, and it was the Blacks who Voted YES on 8 !!!!!!!!!!
“Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

I don’t understand this at all. Marriage is not only a religious thing. If the Church doesn’t want gay people to have the ceremony in their presence then that’s fine. It’s their decision and they have the right to it. However, I would like the same rights as everyone else when I plan to spend the rest of my life with someone I love. If I can get married by a city or state official, that’s good enough for me. I’m not asking Religious people to change their views, I’m not attacking them, I’m not even asking them to recognize us as married - I could care less if they do. But, we deserve the same rights as everyone else. How can we claim to be America, land of the free if I don’t have the right to be married? This just means that a great portion of our county isn’t equal to the rest of it. Didn’t we already learn that inequality is a bad thing? Why can’t we learn from our mistakes? What is so wrong with me marrying my girlfriend? Just because we’re allowed to get married doesn’t mean that kids are going to be taught homosexuality in school, it doesn’t mean that people are going to start marrying their pets. And the whole sanctity of marriage argument is pure BS when almost half of all heterosexual couples get divorced.

I am a person too. I want my rights.

I live in canada and gay marriage is legal here. It has caused no detriment to our society nor is homosexuality being taught in schools. I personally do myself have a girlfriend however never have the desire to get married however i do feel it is my right to do so. Also, the Toronto Gay Pride Parade brings billions of dollars to the Toronto economy and is supported by many major financial institutions. There will always be a debate on this however I agree, the church is against gay marriage and no one is asking the church to change its views. I agree that religion should not evolve as you believe what you believe however there is one more way to get married as stated. I am proud to live in a country that is truly a free country. Freedom of privacy and freedom of love.

I’m so sick of hearing “the people have spoken.” Do you people not study political science in school anymore? (Or do you only pay attention to the parts that serve your argument?) It doesn’t matter what the infamous majority wants if the issue at hand is Unconstitutional. We could probably get a majority vote saying “From this day forward, all males will be treated as second-class citizens and be exempt from all provisions afforded females in the Constitution.” It won’t happen, because it’s UNCONSTITUTIONAL, just as this horrendous precedent won’t stand up to judicial review when it makes its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Believe me, it will end up there.
